Posted by Diceman19, Feb-23-06 09:51 PM
welp guys, im sorry to say, the time has come to pop my 420a cherry. i am going to be changing the headgasket on my 95 neon. any tips. :+

im replacing the cam seal, going to remove and reseal the oil pressure sender, replacing the headgasket, replacing the waterpump and replacing the timing belt. the idler pulley and the tensioner may get changed as well depending on the condition they are in during removal.

come work on my 4g, oh wait, you no oob. ;-)

i know what im doing, just haven't taken the time to do any of it. there isn't much difference between the actual timing belt stuff, hence, im not to worried about it since i can do my 4g with my eyes closed in a few hours. never pulled a head before though.

Ok if you can explain to me how to get that long bolt out on the side motor mount out with an impact.. while the engine is still in the car.. and not drilling a hole in the fender well.. you sir would be smarter than I. Otherwise I think you are very confused. because there is nooo room to snake out that bolt and the motor mount unless you know what your doing. Like I've said before. If I ever have the displeasure of meeting the fucking choad who designed that. I will graciously kick him in the balls so hard it would represent the frustration of every 2gnt'er who has ever had a problem with that bolt. :)

The bolt where you have to jack it up just to the right height to remove?

Or is this a different one?

yes the one you have to wiggle around for 20 minute to get it and the motor mount out at the same time.

Haha, that's pretty easy once you've done it. I've done it about 3 times and can do it in less than a minute on my car.

But the first time...was like...15 minutes. I also remember not having fun.

Ick, a friend of mine has a 4g63, we swapped the water pump the other weekend, what a pain in the ass! You had to take off the whole front of the engine lol.

That bolt is a BITCH...

Best way I found is to pop off the front motor mount and jack that beast up with a 2x4 and jack... have it clear.

I used a jack and a piece of wood and jacked it up a little bit to where it would somewhat move. The I prayed to the DSM gods and then the planets aligned in the correct order. After that I went to town on it with a couple pry bars and a hammer. The worst part I found out is getting the POS back in.

well jack the engine up just high enough that bolt lines up with a concave area of the fender well. loosen those lines, then wiggle that bitch free.. other than that the rest of the chore is pretty easy in my opinion.

This is all i have to add to this thread.

i have a feeling the neon is a little different. my detailed list shows undo front and rear motor mount, lower engine to allow bottom bolt out, jack up engine to allow top bolt out. the pics show it easily clearing the frame rail. it is not even close to the strut tower. no mention of a side motor mount either. maybe im in luck.

besides, nothing sucks more than the timing belt cover on the 4g. i could barely get that thing out let alone force it back in. PITA. i changed the water pump while i was in there last year, no biggie IMO.

REMOVAL OF "THAT BOLT."

This technique was developed by Dino.

- Back all three bolts out as far as you can, then push back in (do not thread).
- Raise engine up as far you can. Pull top bolt out.
- Lower engine as far as you can. Use right hand to "pump" engine downwards while you pull on the lower bolt under the "frame rail."
- Feel/look at inner edge of strut tower for "the dent" between the hard lines. Raise the motor back up to align "that bolt" with the dent.
- Follow the hardline just above, if not in the way of the dent, to where it reaches the top of the strut tower. Use a larger, slotted screwdriver to *carefully* pry that hardline upwards from there. This will give you room to manipulate that bolt out.

I used this method and had that bastard mount bracket out of the car in less than five minutes. I actually spiked it on the garage floor. Mother fuck that thing. :P

You guys are all newbs, I got that out in no time when I replaced the timing belt. No I'm not joking and no I didn't drill a hole/remove the lines/remove the engine. Maybe I just got lucky :shrug

Nah, I'm just that good.

And why even bother with the Neon? Just throw it away.

update, getting ready to pull the crank pulley, the puller i have is not right since the bolt doesnt go into the hole, just sits on the outside of it. going to take it back and go somewhere else to try another one. got that bracket out in about 5 minutes. :+

this project hits the back burner as i am hoping to pull a 4g63 tomorrow afternoon in about 20 minutes and i go back to work tuesday. i broke a motor mount bolt and the front motor mount is shot so i gotta order those parts too. i wanted it done tomorrow so i could drive it all week before heading up to chicago on sunday, but that aint gonna happen so it can sit for a week.
