37951, one more NT gone to the dark side!!
Posted by stvnaln, May-06-07 04:58 AM
As I was driving home from work in my 95 eclipse, system screaming some System of a Down, intake providing that usual sucking sound, indicating a stock mustang in the rearview, lol, I was overtaken by the display on the water temp gauge, in the red, on a normal day (95F in Texas), where it should have been slightly higher than 50%, but was well above 90%. The next exit was 1.3 miles away, oh shit!!, no shoulder. Throttling down and turning the heater on full blast to pull the heat from the engine, I found myself scrambling for the next exit to pull over and find out what the problem might be. As I take the next exit ramp, limping along, temp gauge full on red, engine revolting my every move, i came to the nearest stop light where my eclipse subsequently died with full blown steam coming from the hood, and absolutely no response from the throttle.

When the tow truck finally came, and he dropped the beast off at my house in a show of humility only a NT DSM'er would know(no crack to DSM'ers), I decided that this would be that last time I would suffer that as a NT.
This car will be transformed into an mustang eating turbo spoolin' POS if I had anything to do with it. To make the long story short...
Upon inspection, valve stems bent, races scored, cylinder compression about as consistent as a kinky Friedman voter turn out, I decided that this POS is going to be a turbo'd screamin POS if I had anything to do with it, lol.
To be continued....

Give opinions?

Sounds like you've found an excuse to build the motor and turbocharge the car. Be ready to drop 2.5-5k and have fun doing it. And I hope you're planning on it being able to eat v-8 mustangs considering many of the 6 cylinders can be beat by a stock 420a

Eagle rods JE 8.8:1 pistons Hahn rececraft stage 3 turbo kit and a full on head job to include port and polish/3 angle valve job, and a set of Crower stage 2 cams. A Phantom grip LSD conversion. place a few bucks into the suspension (sway bars and good springs/struts) you should also take a look into your brakes wile she's down you definately don't want to have insufficient braking.

This is pretty general. Are you looking for suggestions on parts to get for an engine rebuild, turbo parts, vendors to buy from, what you need to get started, opinions on which pistons/rods?

I'll try and find a few links to get you started, but if I was you, I would start by reading GSgoinfast's write-up on custom turbo kits:

http://www.2gnt.com/index.php?d=GSGoinFast%20Turbosystem

then I would search:

star, hrc, treadstone, fcd, missing link, eagle rods, je pistons, wiseco pistons

Personally, if I was to do the turbo setup all over again, first I would buy the fmic and piping that eclipse982nrRST has for sale in the FS section because it's a really good buy.
http://forums.2gnt.com/dcboard.php?az=show_mesg&forum=16&topic_id=101415&mesg_id=102707&page=

Then I would buy either a treadstone manifold or a used star manifold.
http://www.treadstoneperformance.com/product.phtml?p=198&cat_key=52&prodname=420A+Cast+Turbo+Manifold

Brand new turbonetics turbo, maybe something pretty like this:
http://www.slowboyracing.com/more.php?id=1979&mods=14-1114,21-1116,48-2150

star downpipe

walbro 255lph high pressure fuel pump:
http://www.extremepsi.com/store/customer/product.php?productid=16273&cat=257&page=1&veh=2G%20DSM

vortech sfmu with 40# injectors or if you really wanna get crazy for fuel, either Megasquirt or the Hahn Portfueler instead of the sfmu. Missing link.

Zeitronix wideband with egt probe and boost sensor and display unit and you will pretty much be set with gauges (DR1665 may still have his zeitronix for sale)

link: http://forums.2gnt.com/dcboard.php?az=show_topic&forum=16&topic_id=102554&mode=full

Then if you don't already have the exhaust, I would get the Tsudo 3" exhaust from ebay and a test pipe or high flow cat.
http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/Tsudo-N1-CAT-BACK-EXHAUST-MITSUBISHI-ECLIPSE-95-99-GST_W0QQitemZ8055554309QQihZ019QQcategoryZ33630QQrdZ1QQssPageNameZWD1VQQcmdZViewItem

Edit: also forgot Tial 38mm wastegate with your choice of spring:
http://www.extremepsi.com/store/customer/product.php?productid=16320&cat=1142&page=1

^^^the parts I supplied links for total close to $2500 alone Another $500-$700 should get you a fuel system and the downpipe unless you go for the hahn portfueler then your looking at another ~$1200 on top of the original $2500. Then you can easily spend $1000-$1500 on parts for the bottom end

As for motor parts other guys can give you more insight then I can on that

Thanks for the links and info, they provided a lot of useful insight. Right now I am in the final planning/decision phase of my project.
I know I want to go Turbo. I am considering a T3 configuration with an acceptably sized intercooler given a stock nose clip.
I need to further research the diference between internal and external wastegate and the impact that will have on my decision.
Any advice here would be appreciated!
I have been running an oil cooler with the stock bottom end, headers, intake, MSD ignition, wires and B&M short shifter.
Should I keep the oil cooler (I live in Texas)?

Several turbo kits i've seen provide an oil line which the turbo unit needs for cooling, .....where should that connect with the oil system, should it connect to a sandwich type adapter or one of the rear oil sensor ports on the rear of the block?

I definately want to build the bottom end to handle anything i want to throw at it within reasonable limits.
I have my engine disasembled and ready to pull (cherry picker standing by), less the rusted CV shaft nuts so i can pull the shafts from the transaxle. These are being a bitch, lol. Nothing a little PB won't cure though.
Again, I really do appreciate all of your input and direction, and hope i can give back to the 2GNT community as well.
Thanks,

Never mind about the oil line piping question. I missed that part of GS Goin Fast tutorial, sorry!
