BBD, Public Enemy, Run DMC, Arrested Development, Jodeci, New Edition, A Tribe Called Quest and the like.

Anyone else like hip hop from the golden years between 1987-1997? Anything newer than Dre, WarrenG, Cube, NWA et al has been predominately bullshit. I think Tupac was the nail in the coffin of true hip hop music. Today it's just generic drivel sold to clueless white kids in the suburbs.

Anyway, thought I would see if anyone else picked up a good vibe from a trip down memory lane with this sort of stuff.

(PS - I also have stations based on BBKing, MilesDavis, Beethoven, Hybrid, Pendulum, Cavalera Conspiracy, and Dimmu Borgir.) :P

Before you posted this I actually was d/l'ing Dr. Dre's old cd Chronic and looking for some of this other ones. I will disagree about the Tupac comment as I think once he was killed is when shit went down the crapper. What he produced and sold *during his lifetime* was in general quality shit that had actual lyrics and meaning behind what he was signing. Once all the "bling-bling" shit came around and every video had lambos and Ferrari's is when rap was degraded from crap to just plain fucking worthless horseshit. Once in a while new music comes out into the mainstream that isn't complete garbage.. but it's been almost non-existent the last few years. We always made fun of our parents for 60-70's rock they hung on to (although some of that is good too) now we ourselves are going back to the music of our childhood because the current music is mindless drivel in our opinion. Interesting cycle I would say.

This is oh so true. Great point made. I still can't fathom how today's younger generation can be fueled by the mindless driven ignorance that is displayed on MTV and all the bling bling, sittin on twenty fo's etc...

It's not cool to display the bling anymore, for christ sake look at the economy and where we're at now. If you're gonna flaunt the shit still, do at least some good and donate to some charity and share your wealth.

I remember when people rapped because of the bullshit they had survived or grew up around, not what they bought when they sold out. Most of these "rappers" grew up in suburban middle class households and cried like bitches when they didn't get a capri sun with their bagged lunch. Shit... music in general used to mean something, now it's repetitive bullshit that is regurgitated on every song of every album. Thank you 80's and 90's for giving us the last bit of artistic indulgence in mainstream media. Once you take the independent and put them in a high dollar label they forget where they came from and subject their artistic intelligence to the garbage of the record labels. I may be wrong, but I think that's what Brian was saying. Once Tupac was killed, it was the nail in the coffin for GOOD hip-hop.

You got it right, sir. With the departure of Tupac, mainstream hip hop left the path of righteous lyrical skills and a message to mindless, superficial drivel with no substance. There's a reason why they all have to "feature" other artists on more than half the tracks on their albums.

There's a definite difference between the likes of Digital Underground and, say, Westside Connection, but both demonstrate lyrical ability and entertain beyond simply getting bunk and crunk at da cloob while you lean back, lean back, lean back. I mean, what would Tupac say if he saw how the "hits" today are little more than four or five sentences repeated over a 15 second loop of some 80s pop track? I bet he'd smack a few niggaz 'round the way.

90's hip hop is far greater and beyond this new millenium shit. I can't stand rap song about some stupid dance. Though I will give it up to Jay Z and Nas for being the last remnants of the good ole times. Just not the same anymore man. EPMD, KRS One, De La Soul, Big Daddy Kane, wtf happened to rap music? Song with messages...two of my all time favorites "keep ya head up" by 2pac and "If I Ruled the World" by Nas.
