ZOMGZ. I'm digging this browser. Still consider FF3 my fave, but this is just Cham-WOW. The interface takes a little getting used to, but the speed with which this thing loads pages is bril.

(There's also a tab under options called "Under the Hood," so you knwo there's a car guy at Google somewhere.) :p

Depending on your OS, altering your root DNS settings can yield very similar results.

So far I'm really enjoying it. It's also made me realize that the internet is a cold and harsh place without AdBlock or FlashBlock.

Was about to search for this when I read this thread!

EDIT: It's so...plain! Where are File, Edit, and my menus! I feel lost but I know exactly what I'm doing...weird.

Good software with a well thought out user interface should be fluid like that.

I'm still enjoying it so far but I'm not a huge fan how it creates multiple instances of itself in the Task Manager or how it installed and automatically ran GoogleUpdate in the background.

Anybody catch how you can resize text boxes on pages? Pretty damn slick if you ask me.

Do0d. That's neeeeeaaaaat. Me likey.

The multiple instances thing kind of bogged me down a bit this morning while cranking out newsletters. I end up having a number of browsers and stuff open to edit, preview and submit things and it just crawled this morning. Might leave Chrome for simple goofing off at work browsing. If I weren't going to a Dbacks game on the company dime in about ten minutes, I'd try it in the chat...

It doesn't render pages properly; and It's going to make doing Ajax absolute hell. Good idea, bad execution.

Why? This isn't new technology. It's WebKit which any web developer worth a shit should be doing anyway.

It's WebKit, the same rendering engine used in Safari. It's fast, it's standards-compliant, and it's already widely used. If the page doesn't render properly, more often than not it's the page's (or dumbass web-coder's) fault anyway.

It's never the coder's fault.

Well we don't test Safari (Not my idea, nor do I do webdev.) I'm just saying it's going to cost more man-hours to Test on IE,FF,OP and now this.

Less man hours to write standards-compliant code that most browsers parse correctly anyway.

Actually, I feel pretty dumb now. The multiple instances is the fact that each tab is it's own process. So if one site fails you can kill the one process and not the entire browser. Just right click on the tab bar and go to the built in task manager. Makes sense now.

I'm totally digging this new omnibar thing. It remembers search sites so you can search 3rd party sites without actually going there to search.

Go to Webster.com.
Use the search there for whatever.
Now, any time you want to use Webster in the future you can just go to the address bar, type in "Webster" hit tab and then your search string. Me really likely.

the current release is a great proof of concept, but it's also a beta, so god knows what the final version is going to look like. I think they tossed this out to help ramp up interest in the Android project, not that Android needs a lot of ramping-up. The idea of Chrome being entirely Open Source is not new, but Google's implementation is going to be interesting. I'm waiting for a proper release before passing any serious judgement -good or bad- on it.

But I do agree, it flies. I don't expect that to last though.

You guys notice the terms and conditions (EULA) bit about how anything you post via that browser anywhere on the net becomes property of Google? Like forever and ever, royalty-free, use-as-we-wish material? Seems a bit heavy handed to me. :shrug

You're a bit slow on the news. ;) That wasn't the right EULA to go out with the browser. Google will be fixing it with future downloads, retroactively as well.

Aye, and the big thing to remember here guys, is it's still BETA. There's gonna be bugs, missteps (as was with the EULA), and the like.

Also, wasn't sure if it was said already, but the reason why each tab shows up in the processes is because each tab IS its own process, which overall, will reduce memory leaks.

It also uses their new Javascript rendering engine, v8, which makes rendering Javascript more efficient (or will, when the bugs are worked out). IN ADDITION to that, this browser sandbox's nearly everything, except plugins such as flash, and by sandboxing I mean it lets each tab control its own process, but strips it of its rights to read and write to your disk. While it is fast as hell, and overall a revolutionary browser, it will not replace Firefox for me, until plugins for it are available. I can't part with some of my Firefox plugins. (And Chrome does NOT work in Linux yet, not even in WINE, Linux version to be wrote soon hopefully)

Main thing to remember here, is this is still beta, and it is to be treated as such.

Actually, the exact opposite - it would exacerbate any existing memory leaks by the number of processes you have leaking.

That's not why they do it. They do it so one modaled tab, or one crashed instance, doesn't bring down the entire browser.

Wow. what is this chromie thing you talk about.

I have been browsing 2gnt.com with Mosaic Netscape 0.9 since 1994.

works like a champ.

In my opinion, Chrome is just as inferior as Firefox. If my websites don't work properly in another browser, then there's bugs. Why should I redesign something that's been fine for years?

Keep working on it guys! I'll run it again when it's bug free and my code works properly.

edit: but it is fast. i admit.

If your websites were written correctly, they'd render in browsers other than IE.

2GNT.com looks the same in IE, FireFox, Safari, Chrome, and Opera. :shrug

it also (mostly) passes HTML validation via http://validator.w3.org/ as HTML 4.01 Transitional.

Oh mai. Myke, for shame. Firefox? Inferior? BOO.

Firefox is why the intarwebz0rs is a good place to be. No bullshit ads. Plug ins for just about anything you want to do. The web is becoming less and less about viewing web pages and more about uncomputing, wherein applications run in the browser.

Consider this an opportunity to renovate yo shiz.

2gnt works of course because it is a simplistic forum. i do not see flash or dhtml. firefox and chrome can't even handle simple img tags and how borders are displayed. ah fuck it i don't feel like explaining it to you. i couldn't begin to make you understand. it's not worth it.

This sounds something an elitist Mac owner would say. I think Myke is expanding what our preconceived notions of what an asshole is. ;)

Listen Myke, it uses a rendering engine that's mostly compliant and already in use. More so than IE ever was or will be at the rate their going. If web coders want to single out who visits their sites, who are we to stop them? Here's gun, aim down.

And actually, its IE that renders code sloppy. When I build a site, I code it in Firefox, and then port it for IE.

Designers that arent lazy code for all browsers, and make their code compliant. That way, it looks good in all browsers :P

Show me a single example of the above, and I'll show you what's coded wrong, or blame it on Adobe for their shitty Linux support.

boy did I start something or what? haha

My shit works across all 3 browsers. I don't code to single out anybody by platform...I can't or I'd lose sales. This is an argument that nobody will win. play nice
