I just would like some help if anyone has any information about this. I am basically just starting college as a mechanical engineer and have been looking into internships and such for some time. Does anyone know of any companies that hire students, it doesn't have to exactly be an "internship" or "co-op" but something like that. I really want to get into performance and engines, im specializing in IC engines. The problem is that I can't seem to find any companies that actually seem to use engineers to develop products but I know there has to be some somewhere. I would like to stay away from car companies, so places like Hennessey, SVS, AMS, Callaway, ect. is what I'm really looking for. Anyone know if they do any hiring like this? Or even a summer job at a performance shop for experience. Thanks for the help if you have any!

I just graduated so I can give you some insight. Right now, I am looking for Government/County jobs and I've notice in every department, they have openings for some sort of student worker that requires you to be a student in some form of program. Look for at your county/state website since I found these leads in CA but every state should have one too.

try to see if there is a local MESA (Math Science and Engineering Achievement) program near you, i just joined the one in my comm. college. they will help you ALOT. Let the learning continue!:thumbsup

Well, where to start.

First do as the others stated, join programs through school/govt/etc. These will give you good ideas as to what's around your area and what types of jobs you'll typically find as an intern.

This past summer I found a job at Simplicity MFG. (orange lawn tractors) Either way, don't typically expect that you're going to get any grandeur job, they give us the stuff the 'real' engineers don't want to do or have time for. I say this from my own personal experience and many friends who've done the same (I had to help a lot with the SAP switch, a different CAD managment software switch and other misc. smaller projects here and there).

The point I really want to make is that just because you're topic of direct study is IC, don't rule out other options. ME experience in whole is equally important. Also, you can't just wait for opportunities to fall in your lap. Go around, call, say you're interested in working; even if they're not 'hiring'. Initiative says a lot in this field.

I do understand that the possibility of getting a job working for a company that works directly on IC engines is small, it's just hard in Iowa where most companies near are AG companies which I don't really have desire to work for at all. I will look into more things and hopefully I can find something. Thanks for the help
