32749, To the other IT professionals...

I know the rampant stupidity of users is something we all muse about.
However, today, there has been no end to the barrage of idiocy in my office. I'm really at the point to where I am ready to strangle the next 404 that poses another stupidy query to me. My question to the rest of you is this: How do you deal with the rage when you hit the boiling point?

I never worked in IT, although I think I can understand your frustrations with their idiocy. I used to work in health care and got similar reactions from people when I would explain medications or therapeutics to someone. At the end of the day, or week if I made it that far I always knew I could turn to a big ice cold glass of Alcohol at a fun bar with all my friends. If anyone has the old picture of Dino with the bottle of Jack at his desk, I think that pretty much sums up the best coping mechanism to dealing with the morons of society. I don't know who originally said it but I've heard Driggs quote it a few times, "Think of how stupid the average person is, and realize that half of the population is stupider than that" luckily, you get to deal with the lower half..

I blame my medical students for anything that happens, or anything they do.
that usually keeps me good through the day so i dont snap, (snaping with a scalpel in your hands is a bad idea.) then i go home and turn up the music and do somthign to the eclipse, or jump on the computer and play some mindless FPS

Not in IT either, but my customers make up for it. I do my best to make sure that I don't do things to piss off my IT guy, but he's my friend and I know what he goes through.

as for how I don't start going postal?

I manage stress by not caring or getting emotionally attached to my clients. Its a little bit of an art, you have to manage treating them like the mental giants they are, and being condescending. I like to err on the side of being a complete dick to them and smiling while I do it.

Also, guns are fantastic stress relievers.

And smoking.

I try to see how many passwords I can set to !ID10T! before end users start to notice. So far I'm rolling on 3 years of straight up ignorance.

That's messed up - as if med students don't have enough BS to put up with 3rd year. Especially the surgery rotation (it sounds like you work in the OR.)

hahah i dont do it constantly but some times when im in a pissy mood because i messed somthing up, or my staff is being a cocky dick and blaming me for his wife not getting a new Benz. (sorry venting lol)

usually its worse at the begining of their rotations when they still think they are gods gift to medicine and think they dont have to listen to me at all

It's times like this that I'm happy I'm a Sr. Specialist. Any calls go through the help desk first, then to NOC, then if they can't help, it comes to me IF I'm on-call (which we're on a 4 to 5 week rotation). My next on-call is 5/15 through 5/22.

My buddy told me about a call he got at his old job and the ticket said that "y-5" was down. We now joke about wi-fi is out, y-5 is in.

However, I did see an e-mail from a mullet saying they couldn't RDP into a server, so I checked and they RDP'd into the server, then RDP'd into the server...again...FROM WITHIN THE SERVER! yeah, they hosed their connection, and the other available connection.

Also not in IT, but I have to deal with my staff of 8 lazy, nagging, bitching, and moaning women. The best way I can deal with their idiocracy is by looking at my last pay stub, then looking at theirs, and laughing.

Works every time.

Pift. IT is fucking easy mode. "Does it work?" Oh yeah it works. Job done. :) Imagine if you had clients over analyzing your shell scripts or conf files. Welcome to my world.

Edit: Yeah im mad at my IT group cause I had to setup my own linux staging server for them cause they wanted to do it in windows.
