32405, Looking to get a new digi cam, input?
Posted by cougar694u, Apr-02-08 02:31 PM
I'm not wanting to spend more than $400. Here's what I've got my eye on so far:

Sony DSC-H3

Canon Power Shot S5IS

Fuji FinePix S8000fd

Anyone have any recommendations. I'm typically partial to Sony and don't like that Kodak forces you to use their software, as I like the standard USB mass storage device.

Pick up an XTi now that the XSi are phasing them out. I grabbed 3 to eBay @ $320 a pop (no lens). Keep your eye out on FW and SD.

I think the XTi is slightly above my budget, since I'll still have to get the lens for it. I don't mind going to the XT for the price, though.

If you're trying to get a point and shoot, I'd go for the canon. I've had about a million digicams, always break them or lose them. My last one was a canon powershot SD something or another, and it was an AWESOME camera. My personal fav so far. I just picked up a new SD1000 from Dell for 150, and an 8gb memory card for 40 bucks. Awesome....

I think I'm gonna pick up an XTI. Windy (my wife) has a 35mm Rebel with the 35-80mm & 80-200mm lenses and a UV filter. According to Canon's site, the XTI uses EF and EF-S lenses, which they're both EF. She just busted out her stuff from back in the day.

I think I'm gonna find a body only and get to takin pics. I did like the alpha series Sony's, but since I have 2 lenses already, I can buy a bare DSLR and use what I've already got.

Thanks for the input.

**EDIT**
Oh, and I got a promotion today with a raise equivalent to one month's pay....on top of the 3% raise I got last month

Point-n-shoots... Look at the Panasonic Lumix TZ3.
I also like the Canon Powershot A520IS/A720IS a LOT for the price.

For SLR, The Nikon D-series (D70, D80) is really nice, as is the similar Canon Digital Rebel. Try both brands out in person.

Amazon dropped the S5 IS down $20 to $300. Not bad, not great. http://www.amazon.com/dp/B000Q3043Y

I know you were an eBayer so I figured you knew about FW (Fatwallet.com) and SD(slickdeals.net).

Good luck finding an xti :)

Ordered, should be here today with 4GB CF card. I ordered new to get the warranty. I found several for the $350 range, but were not the US models and didn't come with the US warranty. I went ahead and spent the additional $100, so we'll see how it goes when it shows up today.

Guy I skydive with just picked up a Sony HC-38 after he broke his previous cam. With a wide angle lense its does an awesome job up in the air. Cant imagine it does any less on the ground and considering its only a 200.00 cam, its awesome.

NICE! I'd love to jump more, but I keep spending money on other things.
