there have been a bunch of breakins around our neighborhood, and now this past week there was a double murder just a block away.
i worry about my wife being home with my son and me at work, and then at night.

ive been looking into getting a handgun and have narrowed it down and was wondering if anybody has any advice or has used either.

H&K USP-40
SIG P226-40

id like to keep it at a 40 cal as my wife might have to shoot it, but i want more stopping power then the 9mm.

i have been around guns all my life and know how to shoot comfortably and accutatly, but this is the first hand gun ive owned.

I did a little searching, but if it were me I'd choose the SIG. It would serve its purpose without a doubt. My old man has a P226 and I've never fired a handgun that felt as good as this one. It just feels completely right to me. Thats just my opinion however.

I own a USP 40, It is by far the most reliable handgun I own; Next to my 1911's of course. ;) It has good stopping power and low recoil; making it ideal for the wifey too. It is easy to break down and clean as well. Ammo is a little pricey; (especially right now) but as more law enforcement agencies are adopting the .40 S&W over the the 9mm parabellum, prices should start to drop. It's too bad you're not local or I'd take you to the range and let you shoot it.

I would go to the local range with your girl and rent a bunch of guns in .40cal and see which ones you like. They usually charge a reasonable hourly rate for as many guns as you want to try, plus ammo, and you don't have to clean them afterward.

The handgun my g/f chose was nothing like what I expected her to want. For example racking the slide on a semi-auto Glock or Springfield XD was too difficult, and she liked larger steel frames because they had less recoil.

Also consider an 18" shotgun instead of a handgun. Far easier to use, about half as expensive, and safer indoors.

i already have a 20" Remington 870 SOCOM, but the wife hates that thing, and since i dont have a large upright gun safe i dont keep the shotgun in our bedroom. so with the handgun i can fit it into a small safe under the bed in our room

I'd suggest you check out the JUDGE by Taurus. This is the next weapon on my list to purchase. I think it'd be easier for you wife to handle as well since it's a revolver. I watched a little lady at the range fire one and she had no problems at all. I expected much more recoil from it. I wouldn't want it as a carry weapon but it would be a great home defense weapon. Nah, those are for a totally different purpose. They're more for like you said personal defence/hunting against wildlife and outdoors. The JUDGE was built for close quarters such as a bedroom or your car. I do like the big revolvers though, just not for a home defense situation. I'm currently keeping my Para Ordnance 1911 .45 by the bed.

Regardless, either gun you choose is going to get the job done.

I don't own firearms, and the g/f probably won't ever let me, but from what I've heard from the local police agencies, they've all gone over to the .357 SIG and they all love it. Good stopping power, easy to use, nice modern handgun. The other nice thing about the .357 SIG is you can swap out the barrels for, correct me if I'm wrong, .38 special for cheap target practice.

The other thing I've considered for home defense, and once again I'm not allowed to own firearms, is 12 guage shells packed with rock salt. I don't know how the law stands on this, but I consider it a less than lethal weapon, which means you're doing your part for humanity right? That and once you shoot the first thug, word will spread that you don't want to screw with the guy down the street, for some reason the thought of 72 hours of excrutiating and unending pain scares people off :shrug

True, in 99.99999% of cases, but, those are both respected names in firearms; and both weapons have proven themselves time and time again. With the proper knowledge and maintainence, the only thing you need to worry about is the quality of your ammo.

Shells packed with rock salt are not legal. But for some strange reason the shells with barbed pellets are... :shrug

true and hence why the HK and SIG are only used by the special forces and other unique units.
the latest general issue sidearm contract was once again given to Baretta over SIG. eventhough most people involved with the testing said the SIG was a better gun.

we went to the range yesterday and shot a bunch of stuff. (even a full auto Uzi they had in stock lol)
the wife had fun when the slaes guy put one of there "Lasermax" Green lasers on the gun and let her play with it. http://www.lasermax.com/
you would be suprised how much attention you get from everybody else on the range with a green laser.
i do have to say that the green one showed up a whole lot better in low light then the red varient.
the wife was hitting lethal center mass rapid fire with no problem, i even caught her smiling once

she didnt like the way the sig felt and the lack of an ambidextrious mag release put that one down. (shes a lefty)

so we narrowed it down to the HK-40 USP compact, and the Springfield XD-40 Subcompact.

both of these i can comfortably conceal (Neb. is a CCW State) and the wife loved both.

ohh she loved the Judge video and wanted to try that but it was too big for her hands :(
so we decided to get a nice reflex sight and an 18" barrel for the 870 SOCOM, for a nice backup.

Great! :) See I never would have placed ambi controls on any priority list, but its the little things that really matter, and why you should always find a gun that fits you personally before buying.

I think between those two, the HK is more rugged and higher quality, but I'd choose the XD40 because of the grip-based safety. No fiddling when you need to use it for home defense, just pick up and shoot.

Must be nice to have a CCW :( They're impossible to get in CA.

Nevermind. If you read foggys post above, thats basically what I was trying to get at. A lot of the people involved in testing approved the SIG over the Baretta, however this is where the lowest bidder phrase comes into play. Did you happen to read the link on the SIG P226 link I posted at the very top of this thread? It's an interesting read.

The HK USP is a wonderful weapon. I had a USP 45 for a while, now I roll with a Springfield XD .40 Tactical. If you are intent on deciding between the HK and SIG, take your wife with you and go to the store and handle both of them. They both feel very different. SIGs have smaller grips as opposed to the HK. I dislike the feel of SIGs despite great performance. I have big hands...

The gf and I want a matching set but i dont think the two of us should own firearms together....

However, i found a steal on an ak47 or one of it's clones/variants for $475. It's so tiny and antique-looking. Every time i walk into that pawn shop, i have to hold it.

Chances are good i'm just going to buy a compact 9mm for personal protection to keep in the car. Low budget. I dont care what it is as long as it flings lead and keeps whoever from trying to do me or my loved ones harm to back the f-ck off.
