Ha, after getting a foot of snow a few days ago, it was 50* here yesterday, all the snow melted and I thought it would be a good idea to put in my mail box since when I resided my house I had to take it off the house. I started digging in the ground and it was froze too, so it will have to wait.

Electric spec is not 3', i work for the electric utility and can say from experience that you are very wrong.

Water pipes are minimum 36" due to frost line.

It reminds me of when i did surveying work. A 130lb man driving a metal stake in a frozen ground with a 20lb sludge never seemed to work out for me, took like 15-20mins for me to do one:P

By primary you referring to 4/12kv/34kV correct? Your right, new subdivisions typically get the primaries, transformers, and most services installed before final grading. A service drop is not referred to as a primary (yet so many people seem to think it is). Now the damn landscapers come along and remove 12-24" of clay to lay down 4" of top soil. Service drops are only installed 24" below surface and thats direct bury. Conduit runs are a little different depending on application. Most of your City (chicago) duct packages can be as deep as 20' or 6'. It all depends on the engineering and other utilities located there. In the city we installed all concrete duct packages though so good luck hitting it with a hand shovel. It all depends on where you live to, southern states have a hard time because 24" is all water.

Many garage feed wiring is within the top 12" of soil and its typically direct bury Romex. 40 years ago there were no such things as spec or whats really important is CODE. Your believed spec doesnt mean jack shit to anyone. Plainfield still has very lienant CODE. Shit, our houses are all built with romex...no conduit. When i rewired my garage I went with 1/2 conduit, not because its safer, because it was covered inside the walls and if i burned up a wire, i was not going to tear my wall apart to fix it. Same with the shed, direct bury would need to be around 16' down with my dogs but sched 40 PVC cant even be broken into with a hand shovel.

Yeah, I don't mean the service drops. Primaries being the wire feeding the transformers... ours are 4kv or 13.2 kv. All our feed cable is in conduit under roads and stuff, but in residential UDs it's obviously just buried. I don't know anything about underground stuff, except for the UD stuff for residential developments, and industrial parks, and I like it that way. I hate underground. It's a real pain in the ass.

On a side note, we just got hit with an ice storm, and i've worked three 16 hour days in a row, and I gotta go it again tomorrow and possibly sunday. I can't wait until all this shit is cleaned up so I can have a life again.

Ugh, I worked 92 hours this week, thanks to the ice storm in northeast ohio. I'm friggen exhausted. Should be a nice paycheck though. And yeah, if I'm ever out that way we should meet up.

Yeah i do vaguely recall talking about it. Sometimes I regret leavign the union/Field but other times like winter I dont. Storms are much better to be in the field though. Office is so screwed up its not funny....:)
