31115, How many of you have trained in some form of Martial Arts? Posted by totaleklipse97, Jan-28-08 07:52 AM
Just curious.. I'm sure with this large of a sample we have some various arts here. I'm looking to broaden my scope in the future and would be nice to know some other viewpoints. I'm currently training in Brazilian Jiu Jitsu about 8 hours a week (5 days) and so far I really enjoy it. Starting out you get pretty sore from all the choking but you acclimate to it and it's a pretty good workout. Just this last week I started sparring with another guy and got him to submit a few times. He also got me with some sweeps. I just started about a month ago so I haven't learned a ton yet, nor perfected anything. I know some martial arts like TKD belt up fairly quick, not that it means much other than bragging, but the BJJ belts very slowly. My instructor is only a purple belt and has been in it for 6 years now. Some of the other guys that are Black belts have been in around/ over 10 years. I like the grappling aspect since most fights do end up on the ground at some point, either because of a throw or knockdown. I wouldn't mind learning some more stand-up/ striking arts just for a good overall aspect.
So let's hear what you got to add..

Man, sounds like a blast. I have wanted to learn some BJJ, but I don't have the time. Too many hobbies as is, and the time alloted for the BJJ is already spent on Boxing. The Boxing is even at a competition level, just a bunch of friends beating the crap out of each other. People do get knocked out lol, but I must say the funniest thing you can do is box with friends. You will never stop laughing when someone gets knocked out lol.

That sounds great, did you guys start out as friends.. cause it seems as though the people in the class with you bond fairly quickly. You have to trust they won't hurt you, as you won't hurt them (more than necessary). That is one thing I've wanted to train in is boxing in a formal way. What kind of gloves and protection do you guys use, I'm assuming you do wear headgear. I go to school full time, so I don't really have all the free time to do BJJ but I try my best to make time. A long with lifting weights and running, I've just been doing a little less of those.

Actually as far as equipment is concerned I keep it to a minimal. I have a heavy bag 110lb and a speed bag. Head-gear is by choice, I own only 3 pair of head gear and none cover the face or chin. Standard everlast head gear for the side and rear of the head. We use everlast 14oz training gloves to spar with.
I do lift weights and play bsaketball alot though. I Lift weights usually 5 days a week for an Hour. I also play basketball 3 days a week and football every saturday, because I like to kepp my stamina up.

The only training I've gone through is self-training through books.
Lately I've really been into JKD, what intrigues me the most is that there is no set standard or distinct way you are required to practice. It is based on ones interpretation and you build from that. It's more free-form/freestyle than anything.
Honestly, I stay away from any sort of organized institution and only rely on a few close friends whom I trust to spar with. This is just my opinion as I prefer to self train/study. To each their own.

There was a big fight in hawaii over the weekend. Cabbage Carera rented a car from my chick. I am also friends with a cousin of BJ Penn next time they go out im tagging along. Cool guy BTW.
Im a lover not a fighter.
I did punch frank shamrock in the arm once I saw him at a IFC fight in cali. He could tell I was a fan we shook hands. He looks bigger on tv. But I punched him and lived to tell the story.

im a brown in jitsu, play basketball everyday of the week for a good 2-3 hours straight, lift weights every other day...and run 10 miles over the weekend. uhhh swim, indoor rock climbing, paintballing....yea guess you can say im pretty active heh. it all builds up stamina which helps me outlast my opponent, which if i decide to test out for black, i have to fight everyone in the class, and any guest (other blacks) non-stop till i beat everyone or collapse trying. jitsu is a blast haha

Do you have a job??? I am very active with lifting weights, Jiu Jitsu, running, racquetball and soon to be cycling... but I usually have to give some things up to get in others. I go to school full time, which can be much more of a workload than most full time jobs, I've done both. I had had twice the free time when I worked. Just thinking that's an awful lot of things to do on weekly basis. I'm finding it hard to not be sore every single day, which is highly uncommon to me. How long have u trained Jiu Jitsu before getting your brown, if you did BJJ I'm assuming quite a long time.

yes brazilian jitsu, ive been doing it since i was 11yrs old. im a full time college student and working part time...as an assistant at my Jitsu school. Whenever i do eventually recieve my black (not for awhile) Ill be one of the teachers at the school as I continue learning from the "big guy" himself. Even when i start my career I will always teach Jitsu on the side. I love it soo much. I am quite busy, however that is how i like it. i always have to be doing something, plus it helps to be a good time manager heh

Well, hmm, trained in a martial art... you could say that :)
For anyone else skilled/trained in the marital arts, please don't get upset at my opinons expressed here. just sharing my views and what I know.
Actually, I have been taking Jeet Kune Do and Filipino Kali for about 9 years now. 1 year with one instructor, and 8 years at my current school.
As it pertains to JKD, I have a black sash. Most JKD schools/instructors do rank their students and have a structured cirriculum, but typically don't give a sash until you reach the last level as I have done, and while there is a ciriculum the class in NOT rigidly taught. It is certainly NOT like going to a Karate class! it is much more relaxed, very little formality (you still bow in and show respect, but we focus on training).
Also, I am a certified instructor (Apprentice Instructor), and I'm going into my 4th year as an instructor (1st year as an Associate Instructor). I enjoy teaching very much, and I am usually willing to show anyone a move or two of some kind at any time, if the person is willing to learn and exchange ideas and techniques and not play the "well, I can beat that" or "I know something better than that" game :rolleyes
In JKD the rank levels are not handed out, you really earn them. I started at my school in 2000 and it wasn't until 2005 that I got the black sash, so that was 6 years. Myself and two other instructors were the first students at the school to get black sashes (two more have since gotten them, and they had trained as long or longer than me).
As part of JKD, we do train in BJJ. We train a little of anything and everything if it follows the concepts of JKD. Part of studying JKD is exposing yourself to many arts and forms and learning what you can from anything.
As for Brazilian Ju Jitsu is an excellent art, very useful and I think necessary to know for self defence, but I'd say you can't rely on it alone as you don't start fighting on the ground and you need good standup skills.
You'd rather not go on the ground in a street fight unless you HAVE to as you can only deal with one person at a time on the ground; you can't stop the guy's friend from kicking you in the head if you are trying to put him in a joint lock.
Also, you mentioned most fights end up on the ground, which commonly happens and could happen to anyone, hence the valuable skill set BJJ gives you. But, I think that most fights end up on the ground because most people who fight aren't trained; they're just clods throwing hay makers who end up falling all over themselves. If someone is trained they'll stay on their feet until knocked out. I doubt you'd find anyone who fights in the UFC, or a navy seal, krav magra expert, or special forces soldier just get taken to the ground so easily, right?
Trust me, I an NOT knocking BJJ in any way! I love training in it and since I wrestled for a million years I took to it very well. I think knowing at least the basics of ground fighting and BJJ is actually crucial for protecting yourself. Hell, I wish I took BJJ in the distant past before I wrestled as it would have made me a far better wrestler.
It's just that, you just can't be a one deminsonal martial artist, so training more that BJJ would be a good idea.
JKD would defenitely get you there as a good stand up component. As for other arts that would also help kickboxing and thai boxing are great stand up arts too. There are many others as well that are excellent, but these two come to mind first.
No, for Kali, I have not trained in it as extensively, so I don't have a black belt in Kali, but I can handle a kali stick or knife rather well. It does focus on the weapons, but there is an extensive empty hand component to Kali that is rather vicious and focuses on close up fighting, limb destructions, elbows, and effective fast fighting. I don't train the emptyhand quite so much as I have JKD as my empty hand art.
If you look at the moves done in the Bourne movies, they all come from Kali and JKD. When they showed the fight coregraphing on the DVD, it was clearly mostly Kali, all familiar moves.

Todd you pretty hit the nail on the head that you really need to be well rounded fighter. You'll always come across someone who is better trained in ground fighting or stand up than you are, and knowing both can give you the edge there. I'd love to learn more in BJJ and branch out to some stand up arts. First and foremost I'd like to become proficient at BJJ at least earning a Blue belt and maybe a few stripes on that, which may take several years, even at 5 times a week. I've been interested in Thai boxing and JKD is offered here at my school but I was thinking I would want a good broad scope before going into that.
