30146, I think this is the most sad i have ever been in my life (pics) Posted by Hedge, Dec-27-07 10:52 AM
So i was heading to my dads today and it was snowing pretty bad, so i was doing about 60km to stay out of the ditch. I went to turn and some asshole decides he doesnt want to stop, instead go around me, but he didnt quite make it around me. he cliped my back end and sent me into a snowbank/ditch. i couldnt open the drivers door so i had to crawl over the center concle and get out the passenger door. when i got to the back of the car i was so pissed off, i hope the frame isnt bent. The guy(who was french, and so was the cop that came) was trying to tell me how i shouldnt have been turning and shit didnt even say sorry or anything once. Im fine myself, but not so sure about the car. I drove the car home with my dad following me and have it in my garage now. here is the list of whats wrong right now from what i can see. lets have an estimate of cost....
right light cover and all lights in it. center light cover/reverse lights licence plate holder back of the hach is dented plastic on the inside of the truck is broken All metal below the hatch is bent hatch wont close Back bumper is punished back fender is done and like all of metal is all broken and warped in the back end Everything inside the right side of the car shakes and rattels. And i dont have colision, so im going after his insurance, the cop said its his fault but cant put recless driving on him because of the weather. maby i should just do an eclipse rear conversion haha. If they write my car off, ill die inside.

Man, so sorry to see this. Be prepared for the car being totalled. I hate to say it but there is enough damage that it most likely will be. Go after his insurance like you said though. At least they will have to payout on it and you can recover from this. Prepare for the worst and hope for the best.
Perfect time of year too. Sorry man.

yeah the repair cost will outweigh the value of the car. If they total it, buy it back for a couple hundred and fix it, you should still have some change left over; or just get a new car. I'll have a Rs for sale super cheap soon, Ive already sold the turbo kit and spare motor to it.

thats really not what i was hoping to hear :( Now that its been a few hours, my neck is starting to get a bit sore, kinda like i fell snowboarding is the best i can describe it. So should i be taking all of my stuff out, like the radio and amp wires and stuff now? or will i get time for that later if it is written off, also, what is the value of the car now anyways? its a 1997.

From what I remember studying in Drivers ed over 10 years ago, cars that are 10 years old or older have zero value to insurance companies. Hence, any damage + no value = totalled.

well i got two estimates today, one was quick and he said about 2500-3000 and the other(who is refered by the insurance company) said 6000, and said it would be an 80% loss or something. so im expecting a write off as you guys said. they valued the back bumper at 1000$ which scares me haha. im thinking they might have brought up the price a bit. So i guess ill be looking for a new car soon.

They always pull that bullshit. Insurance companies aren't in the business of paying claims, they're in the business of making money. Show examples of prices that are well below what they say they are, and make them at least look stupid. Otherwise like someone else said, let em total it, buy it back, and make her better than before.

Find the one with the highest quote let them total it.. If your in a state that lets you buy a car and a salvage title, do so. Work with the body shop you choose and see if they let you find another bumper for a lower price since that's the most expensive part. Get some options either way.. so you already know what course of action will get you the best deal. If you take the totalling out and take the cost of the car run with it and get a GSX or something.

What im planning on doing, sence they will most likly total it, is buy it back, get the momey they will give me. Fix everything myself that i can, pay a shop under the table to do some things i cant and i should come out about even, or even have a bit more money. I dont even think i have to buy the car back, i think they will let me keep it and give me the money. i know a few people that have done that. as long as it doesnt get on the black list for a bent frame i should be alright. Im going to go and try to straiten the bumper now and do anything else i can so it doesnt look as bad as it really is right now. they want to replace the bumper, so i dont care if i fuck it up or anything. In the mean time, i guess i should be looking for some new parts for cheap haha.
One more thing, does anyone know if the big metal piece(i forget the name right now) below the hatch and like behind the licence plate cover is bolt on or weld on? I think ill have to find a wrecked talon, cut it out and weld it in mine unless its bolt on. Ill also need that plastic piece for the trunk, which shouldnt be to hard to find,

well i got rid of the dents in the bumper. i had to take the inside plastics off, so when i was doing that i seen the spare tire jack, the sissor one and it gave me an idea. i couldnt push out the dents by hand, but i acctually got them out with the sissor jack. im pretty amazed. now i want to try to get the back metal piece a bit more strait. ive tried hitting a thick piece of wood with a hammer against it, but is not really working. Does anyone have ideas for this?

I dont think most cars drive the same after being crunched like that. IMO I would buy it back. Then part it you know we always need parts. Make some money on it. Then with your insurance money + partout money get yourself something with a turbo.
sometimes you need to thank the asshole that hits you because you get to upgrade sometimes you really need to PIF him (PUNCH IN FACE)
I built a GST for 2500 total cost car included. And a friend of mine got a GSX for 2500 with a salvaged title. Theft recovery so the car was fine.
you have options my friend.

the car seems to drive perfect, like the truck that hit it was high, so nothing under the car was damaged, i had it up to 120km to see if i had any wobbels, and nothing. im doing an alignment as soon as i get back to school so i have the hoist.ohh, and the guy at the body shop couldnt belive everything was origional, he said it was in amazing shape for a ten year old car, and as much sence as i could part it out, i cant. i mean the frame has no rust at all, it still is the factory colour in amazing shape. here is where im at now.

not yet, they wont until like monday, but i dont think it will be written off, ive got the entire metal piece back in shape now, i just took all the plastics out, moved the wires and am in the process of jacking out all of the dents. Ill get pics out. maby i should add this to the wiki, half ass rear end repair haha. im amazed at how much better it looks. althought there is still a dent in the back bumper, ill have to heat it up or something because it wont stay out.

Let them total the car. With the damage that you have to the rear quarter panel it will probably get totaled anyway.
Fix it after they cut you a check. Don't monkey around with it right now.

the rear quarter panel only had the one spot damaged, it looked bent in the picture but it really isnt. In a way i want them to totel it to get money out of it, but in another way i would just like them to fix it. So ill see what happens, im having fun trying to fix it now, so ill keep doing it for the fun, the insurance has pictures from before anyways so if they want to totel it then they can, ill just have less work to do after. i cant just sit around and wait though, it just kills me inside lol. here is some more pics after i pushed it out. the fact that in two hours i fixed what would have been called totel'd is a pretty good fealing, i mean if it isnt toteled anyway.

so i got another quote on it today, and after parts labour and tax it was 2600$ so i guess i did about 3500$ in body work myself if i go by what the other garage wanted. So i guess it wont be written off.
