Attn: 95_esi_person. I saw in another post you were talking about finishing up an iguana cage. Just wondered if you had any pics of him or not.

Anyone else own an iguana? If so share some details with us!

I've got a juvenile still, he's maybe a year old. I got him from this random girl in the park one day. She was just going to let it go and take off. We live in northern Indiana too, so I knew he wouldn't make it as soon as winter came around. I told her hell no your not going to do that and she gave me an 20 gal aquarium, a light, food dishes etc...all for free!

He's getting close to a foot and a half long. Very tame as well too, I try to handle him atleast once everyday so he is used to people. I plan on one having a room completely setup just for him. I'll take some pics this weekend and post em up on monday.

I had an Iguana a few years ago, won it at a carnival.. It grew to about 30" until it's heat rock stopped working one day and it died due to the cold. So keep it warm! When they're cold you'll notice they're real slow and lazy, but pretty gitty when warm.

Heat rocks are known to get too hot and can end up burning the iguanas skin. They cannot sense dramatic amounts of heat therefore they can get burnt very easily if you do not watch them. I got rid of my heatrock after I found that out. I now use an infrared night light for him and also a daytime light...both are rated at 75 watts and have an excellent source of UVB (ultra violet energy) which they use to digest their food.

A healthy diet is extremely important as well. Normally 60% leafy greens, 30% vegetable, and 10% fruit, all mixed together into a medley.

She say why she was getting rid of the iguana? Thats pretty fucked up a pet is a pet how can anyone just be like fuck this thing and get rid of it. I did have an iguana when I was young it killed itself I think or maybe I had something to do with it but I was looking at him one day and he hopped of his log ramed his head into glass and fell to the bottom of his aquarium. He was fine for about a week after then I dont know what the fuck happened. I call it delayed suicide.

Mine tried shoving his head through the "wire cloth"... ie, grid type chicken wire, when I first put him in there, well, after he checked it out first.

I'm hoping that this new lamp should help him out a bit... 18" Repti-Glo 8.0.

And he's not eating his new "iguana food" that I bought at PetSmart, but then again, I wouldn't either, it looks like poop.

A family moved away and said they couldnt take there dog with them so they dumped her at the pound.

Thats why I have a 55 pound black lab/blue tick hound mix. The dumbass should have at least tried to give the thing away before she went to the park to turn it loose.

I wouldn't feed my iguana any "petsmart" paste based food. Your iguana should be eating fresh leafy greens such as cilantro, parsley, mustard, greens, collard greens etc...I've got a txt document on iguana diet I can send to you if you'd like.

Also take note that there are some greens you shouldn't feed your iguana daily, ONLY in moderation. These would be spinach, kale, cabbages, boc choy, beet greens, and a few others. Also carrots, broccoli, brussel sprouts, califlour and tofu should be avoided. All these vegetables I just listed have certain chemicals that can cause food not to be digested properly and converted into energy, as well as binding with calcium which can lead to weak bone mass and MBD (metabolic bone disease).

I went into a petstore this past weekend to look at some reptiles and was appalled when I saw they were feeding several different types of lizards "lettuce". Lettuce has absolutely no nutrional value whatsoever for them.

60% leafy greens/30% vegetable/10% fruit.

I know it seems like a lot to do for just a lizard, but your iguana will thank you tenfold, and live a longer healthier life.
