hey, im in the middle of changing my oil, and i cant find the filter wrench. i think its at my friends house, so im kinda stuck. is there anything else i can ghetto into taking off the filter? thanks.

Do it closer to the bottom. If you go straight through the center close to the top, you'll fuck up the threads.

yeah i did it at the bottom, there wasnt any room to really hit it in so it took a while with slow taps from a hammer. I was changing my brothers buick oil, not my talon so it was a pain in the ass to get at.

You know, you shouldnt even need a filter wrench to remove an oil filter. They only need to be hand tight.

I hate it at work when I get cars in sometimes for an LOF, and I see the car has been to one of those backyard oil change places like, Lube Stop, Quick Lube, NTB, small places like that, and the kids that work there, use a fucking impact gun to put filters on I swear. They put them on so damn tight, when you remove the filter, the oring sticks to the filter adapter. I have 2 different wrenches too, the normal band style wich that NEVER works, and then a cup that fits perfectly around the bottom of a filter, and you use a ratchet with it, yea that doesnt even work either. I ALWAYS end up getting my big ass channel locks and destroying the filter to get it off that.

Oh sorry, I just had to rant this since its Saturday morning, and I am getting ready to back into work now and will probably see atleast 3 of these today.

So just an FYI out there to everyone, just put your filters on HAND TIGHT. They will NOT leak.

I don't remember if it was the Chiltons or another book, but it gave a torque spec for our oil filters. So I used a cup style filter tool and a torque wrench and tightened it down to the spec. When I went to remove that filter, the cup style wouldn't get it to budge and neither would my traditional style tool. I ended up stabbing it with a screwdriver like stated above to get that damn thing off. On the Mobil 1 filters it says to tighten until it seats and then go another 3/4 turn. I' ve begun doing that and haven't had a problem since.

he last had it changed at like mr. lube or something because he was in a rush between classes, they changed both filters and the oil and charged him like 130$ haha. they put it on way to tught, i had to put the screw driver throught the filter twice to acctually be able to turn it by hand.

Sometimes when i cant get it by hand i use a large pair of channel locks , They work awesome for removing filters. The screwdriver method is messy.

I've never tried the screwdriver, but those cheap work gloves with the rubber grip are usually enough to get them off on the Evo. I always use fram on the eclipse even though I've heard not so great things about them I've never had problems and they're SOOOO easy to get off. I think more filters should come with the grip.

use an old belt (the car kind...not the human kind). the friction works wonders and you dont have to puncture anything. in case you dont have an old belt, the p/s one only takes a few minutes to remove, just soak it in degreaser and rinse/dry before reinstalling it. :true ghetto:

Honestly, I have yet to have an oil filter that I couldn't get off with my bare hands...but then again I'm a man child.

You should try and take one off a new Dodge. They put those things on so damn tight I would always destroy them trying to take them off. I hated working at a lube shop.

Wish I could remember the size of filter I used on the Galant. It's tiny. Think PH16 (stock 2GNT) only an inch shorter and about half as thick in diameter. Lot of 4G63 guys fucking wig when they see that thing. Oh yeah. It's a Fram too. :P

Who needs to spend millions on that when we can just use screwdrivers. i mean their easily avalable, i can say if i truly wanted to go look, i could find atleast 2 screwdrivers hidden underseats and in the back of my car.

Ill just stick to whats quick and easy to do, that accomplish the same job without spending money on things i dont really need. And concidering ive got one (if you would have read the title of the entire topic you would have known that) I wasnt about to walk across town to get it from my friends place halfway through the change. I suppose i could have, or bought a new one instead of using a screwdriver at the time.

I didnt acctually know what OP stood for, so thanks, it kinda made me look like an ass for what i said after that haha, but what can i do and Im not going to lie, i probably didnt read your origional post because after i got the filter off, i stoped worrying about it.
