29307, Torn rotator cuff symptoms? Anyone have/had one or know someone? Posted by eclipse982nrRST, Nov-28-07 03:22 PM
I have had this pain in my right shoulder/upper bicep for about a month now. I fucked it up I think with all the house hold remodeling I have been doing to my home like a new roof, all new vinyl siding, and a complete kitched remodel. Anyway, when ever I lift my arm up about half way or fully upwards, I feel almost like a sharp pain around the should area/upper bicep. It kind of feels like someone is sticking a needle in my arm. Even typing now, I feel pain in my inner elbow going up my arm. I have researched online of symptoms but they all say the same thing, "pain may be felt in the arm region" lol. Guy at my work said it could be a rotator cuff, but he said they usually dont go out until about 35-40 years of age, I am only 22, but my body has taken a beating throughout the years of childhood, lol. I went to the doctor about 3-4 months and they sent me to the hospital for an x-ray of my shoulder. I broke my clavical bone in my right shoulder when I was around 13-15 years old;ish and it never healed right in my opinion, the bone just still looks funny. The pain I have now doesnt feel like that though. I would go the doctor, but I hate going, and I only go when I in terrible horiffic pain or I just cant stop shitting, which ever comes first :) haha.
Anyway, just looking for some input to see if anyone here has ever had one or know someone who does or had to see what their symptoms were. I am not in THAT much pain, but its deffinately there.
Also, anyone know, if it is this, how long the down time is after surgery?
Thanks guys!

Call that place that fixed up Steve Austin IMO. :thumbsup Both my shoulders make noise they shouldn't and hurt occasionally, but nothing like you describe.

/clocks in :)
any time your arms are extended or repeated overhead movements where weight is involved can risk a rotator cuff tear. rotator cuff injury should be felt in the deltoid muscle (muscle on top of shoulder) most of the time ther is a poping or a snaping (like the sound from craking your knuckles) also accompanied by a feeling of weakness when you raise your arms from your side to parallel to the ground. through an entire range of motion if there is any feelings of binding or catching its a tear.
surgery is done outpatient and usually takes a few hours (definatly make sure a surgeon boarded in sports medicine does this) however surgery is only recomended for large tears that dont improve with exercise and physical therapy. sometimes it can be enough to just ice the area (think MLB pitchers ice packs as it covers the whole shoulder) and wear a sling for a few days you also might be able to find a physical therapist to use electrical stimulation, ultrasound therapy or steroid injections
now if you say its more on the bicep then it could be a strain of the biceps tendon where it conects to the shoulder (fairly commom especialy with short term heavy lifting like construction) but this pain is very localised and will be found only on the bicep itself with very little refered pain. if you can do an entire range of motion with your arm and ther is no poping then i'd bet its bicep strain ice will help with relaxation, and unless you tore this very badly theres no surgical intervention
that will be $500 plz lol
hope you feel better

haha. Thats getting off cheap!
I hurt my shoulder about 8 months ago and went to the doctor. I was lifting and my shoulder just gave out, made noises like described above. I could hardly lift my arm up, knew I did something bad right away, and just left the gym. I didn't want to go see the doc but finally did, had an MRI the whole 9.
Turns out it wasn't a rotator cuff tear, just some torn muscles and strained tendons. It took me about 12 or so weeks before I was back to normal, but the pain was pretty bad, and I could hardly drive home. Was stuck in a sling for a couple weeks even.
Anyway, If the pain is bad I would go to the doctor to make sure it's not anything too bad. They play a role in every major upper body movement, and a bad shoulder that goes without proper fixing can be a lifetime of problems...
I just hope you have insurance. Even with an 80/20 co-pay that shit was so expensive. After that experience I won't go to the doctor again unless I have something majorly wrong (an injury like you have haha), or i'm on my deathbed. I watched sicko the other day, and it made me realize how messed up our healthcare system really is.
I messed up one of my fingers and I want to go to the doctor to have an 'appraisal' lol. I don't think they do that though.
good luck!

Hey Mike, I got a simple exercise for you to do. Raise the injured arm straight up above your head. Now allow the arm to bend at the elbow, so that your forearm is now resting ontop of your head. Now, focus on keeping the upper arm in the vertical position and rotate the lower arm outward horizontally, away from your face. If you can do this, then you probably don't have any tear of the cuff. However, if you can do this and there is pain when you rotate the lower arm away from you face(you'll feel it right in the shoulder joint), you most likely have some biceptual tendonitis as stated above. With all the housework you've been doing that is what it sounds like.

Thanks doc. Do you take personal checks? lol.
I will give it a couple of weeks longer and see how she does.

a rotator cuff injury (yes had one about 6 years ago and got rid of it through active recovery and specific excersize(s)) is felt "inside the shoulder joint" imo....
i like the description above about placing your hand above your head....
another one (for rehabilitation) is called a cuban press.....
put your upper arms (yes both) parallel w/ground while standing and place your forearms (and hands) perpendicular to the gound...
rotate your forearm (and hands) towards the ground until they are parallel w/the ground.....
this will rotate your "cuff" no pun intended.. and work the joint...
eat more fats... (fish oils, dairy fats, etc) this will help with joint recovery (MSM, glucosamine, etc.. will help too)
hit up bodybuilding.com and search for rotator cuff (in their forum) and i'm sure you'll find a lot more "good" content...
cheers n good luck...

I got a torn rotator cuff about 25 years ago, The doc said I can't throw 95 mph fasballs anymore. I thought that was pretty good news considering I could only throw 80mph before. (drum roll) Budump bum.
But really had one and the doc basically said I'm screwed. Took a few years but got back most of my power and range. But it is still a problem on overhand from the outfield. Too much and the arm just throws itself out with zero pop.
