28849, Buy PS3 on Black Friday, or wait 'till Chrismas?
Posted by edxmon, Nov-14-07 04:27 AM
We'll I've been bitten by the next-gen console bug. At first I wanted a Wii, but now I saw that Ps3 has F.E.A.R., Bladestorm, and White Knight Chronicles coming out. The 80gb version is now $500+tax and comes with MotorStorm and 5 Free bluray movies. I'm thinking to myself "That's an awesome deal", but is it going to get better by december? I just want some opinions and facts to help make up my mind.

Thanks peeps :thumbsup

Buy it sooner than later. I have read that analysts predict that there will be a shortage of next-gen consoles this year during the holidays. I've played FEAR and it sucked. Call of Duty 4 and Resistance are a lot better shooters.

I'd have to partially disagree about FEAR. While the game itself wasn't badass or anything, It had an innovative AI that wasn't as linear as most FPS titles.

Ed-
If you're going for a PS3 I would get the 80GB edition. It doesn't take much to fill 80GB worth of space; especially if you start D/l'ing stuff from the store. I bought a 360 @ launch and filled my 20GB HDD up in about two weeks...food for thought.

I hated the controls for it and the graphics sucked IMO. Tried to do an online game because I couldn't stand the Single player mode and there were 2 (yes just TWO) matches going on total. Out of all the modes even. That made me shut it off and return it to the rental store.

im getting the 60gig one at christmas, i dont have use for the extra 20 gigs lol. id wait until a bit after christmas and search local classefides, im sure some spoiled kid would get one and not want it so sell if for like 50-100$ off. right now, in ottawa on some sites you can get the 80gig ones for about 425-450. so i wouldnt buy from stores because i can travel the same distance and get them for alot cheaper.

I don't think I want to buy it from just any store. I chose best buy because they offer a 3yr warranty for anything over $400, and I will certainly opt for that. Hmmm, so no one thinks the prices will go down, or deals will get better by the holidays?

Personally I don't shop BB, because I got royally screwed by them in 2002 on a TV, so I can't give any input there; But, the warranty sounds good. There has been no shortage of PS3's on the market, quite the contrary, actually. In that, Sony has actually had to scale back production of the PS3 consoles due to lack of demand in the US market. This is not to say that people don't want it, most (myself included) just don't want to shell out $500.00 for one. (But, I did, begrudgingly.) There are over 2 million PS3's just sitting in warehouses around the US. Alternatively, If you want a Wii, however, you'll be lucky to find one in a store. It took me nearly 3 months of searching store after store then finally getting lucky and finding one as it was being put into the display cabinet. So imagine how much worse it is going to get near Christmas. :shrug Either way, whichever console you buy, let us know when you get it online. :thumbsup

The thing is, with the Wii, it doesn't have any games that really have my interest, at least right now. I know Monster Hunter 3 is coming out for the Wii, but it doesn't even have a release date yet. Wii sports is really entertaining, but I don't really consider it a "game" if that makes any sense, neither do I consider that wario games, that have 5sec mini games a "real game". I guess I turned into a more adult gamer, and need something more in depth? :shrug

I am biased to the PS3 because I buy all Sony stuff (TV's, receivers, DVD players, etc). I am mostly waiting for GT5 and Metal Gear Solid 4 to come out on the PS3, those will be BIG games for the system and will definitely help out with sales of it. And the fact that it has a built in Blu-Ray player, that sold me. Watching a Blu-Ray movie at 1080p is simply amazing. The amount of detail you can see is crazy.

I bought my PS3 from Target and they have a 90 Day Return policy on it (BB only has 30). I had to return my first PS3 about a month later because it started acting funny once in a while after a power surge when my street lost all power. They refunded me the total amount I paid for it (even after a month of owning it) and I went and bought another one and I got $100 back because I bought my first one when it was $599 and it had the $100 price drop so the 2nd one only costed $499. Turned out good for me haha.

Yea im usually a Sony fanboy (Pocketstation,PS1, PS2, PSP, Camera, Cellphone, Headunit, TV) but at a price tag of $500+, I'm having second thoughts :P I'll end up buying both the Wii and Ps3, now the question remains, which one will be the first?

kinda a sony fanboy as well (ps1 ps2 psp) im buying a ps3 eventually. figured id wait until there was a couple games i could not live without on ps3 before i buy one. itll have to be something huge, like a new gran turismo or a new god of war. or both. i bought my ps2 in 2003. for 200 dollars. and bought all the games i wanted. most of them were 19.99. i made my mistake buying the psp when it first came out. had to wait a while before any real GOOD games came out... we were promised gran turismo for psp, but have yet to see it. never again. i can wait a while.

If you want an even better deal check to see if the k-mart where you buy it at also has the gift card deal going on. Basically for every $50 gift card you buy you get a $10 gift card free. So people on-line are saying that they are buying 5 gift cards for $250 and getting an additional $50 in free gift cards and combining the 20% off coupon to walk away with a ps3 for dirt cheap. You might also be interesting in the walmart black Friday deal that has been leaked by employees where you buy a PS3 and take any 10 blue ray disks to the register and they will ring up FREE.

I seriously doubt it would happen, for several reasons. More likely a clever ruse by a bored and disgruntled Wal-Mart employee.

EVERY where you buy a 80gig PS3, they give you a form which you mail back and get 5 free blurays, but they give you a list you can pick from. So 10 blurays doesn't sound too farfetched. Check BestBuy.com for the offer I am talking about, or Gamestop, they have it too, as well as every other PS3 retailer. (at least here in CA)

The site where I got that info from hasn't failed me yet. An electronics manager from Walmart even posted at the site confirming that the sale is legit.

I go to the site to get my stuff at really cheap prices. For example I got a $1,000 laptop a few months ago for $490 using an additional coupon code. Many orders got cancelled cause the company noticed that the coupon was taking too much off but I got mine since I placed it early. Then the other day I used a corporate phone number that was posted to get a $500 cell phone for $80 after rebate with free activation, free blue-tooth and free 2nd day shipping and only one year contract.

If by some odd chance the black Friday walmart sale ends up being not true, your still going to end up getting stuff for cheap since most of the stuff inside the store will still be discounted. You have nothing to lose in trying. :shrug

The 10 free Blu-Ray thing is legit. I have read that it is true from many sources. They are even bringing in extra stock of the movies because they expect it to be a big hit.

Well then, it looks like someone I really like is getting a ps3, just so I can get those bluray movies.

Yeah, I bought my PSP shortly after launch (and the revealing of the TIFF exploit) and we're just now getting quality titles. Although, SH: Origins is the only one I can think of off-hand. I guess I bought my PSP because of the size of the homebrew/support community. I just like the fact I can run a Q3 server (even if it's slow as hell) from my PSP If I so desire. :thumbsup The PS3 has a (buried) option to install a seperate OS; Linux on your console has never been this easy. Anyhow, right now, the PS3 does suffer from a lack of decent titles; Especially since somewhere around half of the in-house developers have decided to do dev for the 360 as well. I don't fight the fanboy wars anymore; as I own all the consoles for their respective exclusives. But, expect to see one of the 3 current names disappear from the hardware market after this generation of consoles.

Ed- Buy your Wii second; as, if you haven't seen the graphical capabilites of one yet, you're going to be disappointed. 480i seems to be the mainstay of Nintendo's newest venture.

Just now getting quality titles??? Dude, what are you talking about? The two best games on the PSP (Lumines and Wipeout) were launch titles, the top 5 reviewed games were all out in it's first year in release, and the PSP has since garnered 44 Games with reviews over 80% on gamerankings. that's 7 more than the DS, and only 37 less than the GBA in half as many years on the shelf.

It's arguably the best handheld for quality software ever made. When you consider it plays ALL GBA/Genesis/NES and SNES games, it is the best handheld of all time.

I agree with you on that one and I don't even have mine modded to play games from other systems cause i'm too scared i'll brick it. I'm waiting till black friday to get medal of honor 2 and can't wait until the full version of god of war chains of olympus comes out. On a side note, i'm glad I have an old psp. I held one of the new ones a couple of days ago and was disgusted at how cheap it felt. They should have kept the old design.

I'd like to address this one too...are you implying that Sony or Nintendo will be the one out of the console business next time around? Because neither is a logical assumption. Nintendo, obviously isn't going anywhere, as the Wii has outsold the 360 already, and has been available half as long. Sony, on the other hand, has sold less consoles than the 360, but they are selling PS3s at a rate of 14,100 per day, with a sticker price of around $500 average. Microsoft is selling 360s at a rate of 17,200 per day at an average price of ~$400 each.

Do the math...MicroSoft's revenue is around $6.8 million a day, Sony's is $7.05 million per day. If any of the three isn't offering hardware next time around, economics indicates it's most likely Microsoft. (Throw in the fact that Microsoft's COGS skyrocketed with their 360 recall/warranty extension, and they are making less profit per unit sold as well).

Sony and Nintendo win...again.

What PSP software version are you running? If it's old enough, you can play emus without modding the system, just by using the grand theft auto game exploit. That's how I still do it on mine.

My psp orginally came with version 2.71 but I had to upgrade it a few weeks ago to 3.5 in order to play the god of war demo that I got in the mail.

Yup. The older ones had a nice weight to it because of the metal plate in the back of the unit, which made it feel more durable. The new ones are plastic all around and the door where you put the games in is made out of plastic and has to pulled open unlike the older psps which had a button that made the metal door open. I read on-line that a lot of people end up breaking the doors on the new ones by accident because of how cheap the design is.
