Waikele suspect may face federal prosecution
By Rod Ohira Advertiser Staff Writer
A 32-year-old man charged today with armed robbery and kidnapping is also facing possible federal prosecution as a felon in possession of a firearm while dealing drugs. Opherro G. Jones, who has 12 aliases including Garry Lopaka Puuala, is accused of kidnapping and robbing a man, 30, on June 15 in Honolulu. He was being held in lieu of $100,000 bail pending an initial appearance tomorrow at District Court.
Jones was arrested following a struggle Friday at 3:37 p.m. at Waikele Shopping Center by Pearl City Crime Reduction Unit officers. He was dealing marijuana in a car with a 19-year-old woman, police said.
Police said they found drugs and two firearms in a bag in a warrant search of Jones' vehicle. One of the firearms reportedly was an Uzi-type machine pistol.
Jones is a felon with 18 convictions that include four armed robberies, four kidnappings, auto theft and escape dating back to 1993, according to Hawai'i Criminal Justice Data Center records.
Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms & Explosives agents are investigating Jones' arrest at Waikele for possible federal action, police said.
