25565, IT dudes: Anyone on a retainer? Posted by bullox, Jun-28-07 10:51 AM
I just got an offer to work for my cousin on a retainer. He runs a small mortgage loan company in Vegas. I plan on moving there for work anyway, my company wants me to move there and stay with them and now this offer on top of it sounds pretty good.
Anyway, the question is - what is a decent quarterly rate to stay on retainer for a small company? I'm thinking what he offered was pretty low, but I have no idea about these kinds of things. Keep in mind that this is not a full time job, just an on call type of deal but for weekends and afterhours.
What he offered was $75/hr and $300/quarterly for the retainer. I thought the $300 sounded pretty low, but again I have no idea about this stuff, that's why I'm asking.
What I'll be doing is very basic network administration, some linux and Windows servers, user admininstration, etc.
Advice?

the $300 is prolly so you dont work for anyone else (might be wrong)..
just have everything in writing and see if you can bump the 75 to 90 or 100/hour...
cheers....
p.s. make sure whatever you put in writing is what you want... you are the commodity in this situation... which means you have the power..
it's family, but still.....
edit: make sure there is an estimate and maybe even a max amount of hours you can work per week/month so you dont get "too busy" with the retainer work so it cuts into your day job...
