The easiest way to quit is to really want to quit. if you want it bad enough, you'll make it. Start by cutting back. Have three or four a day. Then maybe one or two. Then maybe just one as a reward for making it the entire day without smoking. Then none.

I just threw away half a pack and then bought a pack of big red. I've been a pack to a pack and a half a day for the last couple of years. I still want one, but I grab some gum and focus on the task at hand. Occasionally I smoke a couple on the weekends, but then it's out of boredom and not because I really want one. It really makes it easier if you clean the hell out of your car so it doesn't smell like the cancer.

I'm dealing with this right now too. It's hard. It's fuckinghard.

I'm so chemically addicted I cannot function if I got for about 3 hours without one. And if I don't keep smoking regularly I even get crazy and can't work or do anything. My dad just beat cancer for the second time, and he has never smoked. They had to cut his throat out and move his stomach up to take up the slack. He did really good, but it makes you open your eyes a lot. My uncle also just went into the hospital with a collapsed lung and a shot liver, but he is the guy who drinks and smokes all day.

So after 14 years I decide to try to quit. But I'm a fucking pussy with no self control at all. I did a bunch or research and decided to try that Chanix shit, it's supposed to be the best drug to help so far. It makes me feel like shit, and really fucks my stomach up. But it's worth it cause the shit really helps. My friend at work is on it also and he doesn't have any of the side effects I have. I took a 5 hour plane ride and didn't want a cig at all. I even stopped and got a drink and picked my luggage up before going out of the airport to smoke. And that was on the first day!

So give it a shot. It really helps, but it's not going to do much good if you don't have any self discipline and really want to quit. I've gone days now where I would only smoke one cig all day. I'm actually coughing more now hah. I think my lungs are coming back to life. I also stopped drinking as much as I did before. Last two nights I've gone out to the bar I haven't drank at all. Alcohol basically kills the drug heh.

Ha ha, You know I'm going to recommend some pills. Look up Chantix, it's had a VERY high success rate with the cessation of smoking. It works by making the neurotransmitters that once were stimulated by nicotine no longer affected by the chemical. Basically you get no satisfaction from smoking, so you have no incentive to continue. Otherwise, like Dino said you have to want to quit. Have the willpower to do so, and just follow through. It's tough the first month or more, but it's rewarding once you get through that hard part.

I personally do not smoke, and do not see how someone can get addicted to it. I mean I can see it because of the nicotine (sp?) but to me, I had tried it awhile ago for the first time, and the nasty ass smell and taste it leaves in your mouth, yuck. Everytime I tried smoking with friends and then tried to eat, its disgusting.

However, the only reason I chimed in is because I have a good buddy that uses the same thing mentioned above, Chantix. He works with me and used to come over to chat and be blowing smoke in my face and after almost a month on that shit, he is doing a lot better. Maybe 1 or even none cigs at work on a 10hr shift monday through saturday. Not sure how he does at home, but at work, he does hella-good man.

Dont waste your life, get the motivation to quit and you will accomplish that goal.

Good Luck buddy!

If thou can see the task layed out before him, thou shall succeed.

Just do it. With the proper self discipline you'll be able to do it. If you want to really quit, there is no gray area...you have to think no matter what the situation is just say I will not smoke, no matter what craving or side effect it is.

This coming from a person who has never smoked a pack of cigarette's in his entire life, but I am also a person who believes with the proper thought process you can quit smoking with willpower alone. I have quit other things on willpower alone that I truly believe are tougher than squares.

Haha. Sup man?

Just wanted to say welcome to my world.

I know what you mean about the car.

I had to sit down and have a beer and a smoke atleast 3 times today while putting my car back up on jackstands. Fender had to come off. So much other shit had to come off before that. The plastic expanders that are under the headlights for the front bumper got me the first time. Getting to those bolts on the headlamps got me the second time. The third time was just to calm me down after everything was done. Then i caught my cat pissing on my case of beer and got mad because i had to clean that up so i went out and had another unhealthy break.

My best advice to you is come up with another way to mentally manage stress. Chew gum. I personally seem to smoke less when i chew gum but that gets just as expensive as cigarettes before long! :)

*2gnt doc chimes in*

You have options. Wellbutrin (bupropion) is another medication has been shown clinically to aid with cessation, and was FDA approved for this use almost 10 years ago. It is also an antidepressant, but the dosaging used for smoking is different than that used for depression. I recommend you talk to your doctor about it and discuss options.

Best of luck with quitting. It is the best thing you could do for your health (other than avoiding motorcycles) :)

thanx for the help guys . you all seem to be in the same be in the same boat as me . i will definitly look into chantix and Wellbutrin (bupropion). i do 100% want to quit and get no satisfaction from smoking . is chantix and wellbutrin over the counter or prescription only ? i think i will need that cuz willpower alone is not cutting it lol . btw lol at the cat pissing on your beer .sorry to hear about your father etx . my dad also beat cancer.

Maybe you guys addicted to smoking should sit down and add up how much money you have blown on buying cigarettes. Everytime you think about buying another pack, just think about how much more hp you could be adding to your car if you saved that money. I'm pretty sure most of you have probably spent enough on cigarettes to own your dream cars.

$1500/yr on smokes isn't that much. I spend more than that on gas. Even then gas is a relatively small portion of what I spend a week.

Oh man. Erik's gonna bitch slap me. :P

I've tried quitting time and again. You know what keeps me from dropping the habit permanently? Psychology. You see, here's what I've figured out about quitting smoking. Sure, there's a chemical addiction going on, but I think it boils down to psychology.

What happens when someone tells you that you can't do something? Your desire to do it grows stronger. They say you can't go somewhere and, sure as shit, that's where you want to go. Most of us, when we decide to give quitting a try, tell ourselves we can't have a smoke.

It doesn't matter who says it - some asshat on tv preaching "truth," that bitch rolling her eyes at you when she walks past you out in the heat/cold/rain burning a square one, or even you yourself. When you're told you can't have a smoke, you want one even more. Maybe it's worth changing the way you think about quitting.

Instead of focusing on "I can't have the cigarette that I fucking need right now," try telling yourself, "I don't want to go all the way outside to burn one and come back in feeling tired and run down. I don't want a cigarette right now. I'll have one later." It can be tricky playing games like this with the Id, but I think it's ultimately the best way to make it happen for some people.

It's not hard to NOT do something we don't like doing, is it? There's a killer adrenaline rush when you see those red and blue lights flashing in your rearview mirror, but as amped as you feel right then and there, you don't want to get pulled over. How often do you go out of your way to get pulled over by the 5-0? Given a choice, we will never do anything we don't want to do.

Tell yourself you don't WANT to smoke, not that you HAVE TO quit and see how that works for you. Remember that you can always pick up a pack and burn one if you get really hard up. Sure, quitting permanently is ideal, but keep in mind that even reducing how much you smoke is making progress and a step in the right direction. If you're that hooked that you can't go more than a couple hours between smokes, try holding out a little longer before you light up next time.

Take the baby steps as you can and never give up. If you really want to quit smoking, you will quit smoking. Just remember who's in charge at all times - you.

Good luck. Maybe we should all form some kind of support group or something. I think it might make it easier for me if I knew I would catch hell from more than just Erik around here. :D

Everytime I "quit" it was using this psychology. I would decide, "I'm gonna quit for 6 months" or however long I wanted too, and then do it. This is from a usual pack a day habit, and I'd just tell myself, I don't want to smoke and deal with it. No expensive pills or bullshit yoga or something, just convince myself I don't need it and move on. The only thing I would do to make sure I stuck with it was to keep a half pack or so available at all times while I was not smoking, this provided me with the "it's not cause I have to, it's cause I want to" state of mind. Invariably at the end of said 6 months or so, I'd say, ok, that was fun, now I want a cigerette and buy a pack, but that's not the point of this tangent. Good luck, you don't need to spend big dollars on bullshit band-aids to help you do something that a little discipline can do for you, just tough it out.

pick up some cinnamon sticks....

smoke on those instead... just keep some toothpix around as you get the shit in your teeth...

also, get one cigarette and wrap it in duct tape.... puff on that..

it's not really the nicotine (at least for me) it's the movement w/my arm and pulling/dragging on something....(then inhaling)...

cheers n good luck..

the patch worked really well for me... but i ran out when i was in central america so i smoked cigars...

i smoke black n milds once in awhile now.... (and cigars)

hmmm... Maybe you should find a way to quit those Philippino hookers.

Seriously, though. I'm calling my buddy today and will see if his brother in law can hook it up with some sample packs of Chantix. Maybe that will be the ticket. I've tried welbutrin, and it did not work for me. I tried smoke away, it worked well the first time around. I got through 2 weeks without a smoke (the longest I've ever gone btw), but fell back into it. The second time I was not as successful. I wonder if there would be any problems with the Chantix and smoke away system... I'll talk to the doc hopefully this week.

Find someone who supports your goal to quit smoking. When you need a smoke, call them and have them talk you out of it.

Have a baby. That'll make you quit. A nagging wife that is tired of the smell will definitely help you. lol

I've been smoke free since april 2007. I actually quit smoking both the green and brown! Of course, I think my health problems kinda helped too. So nevermind, don't listen to me. haha

I started when I was 16 or so and quit around age 20. I smoked over a pack a day for quite a while too.

I tried quitting many times but none of those methods worked. The only thing that ever worked for me was after a night of tequila drinking I was puking my guts out and threw my cigarettes away and refused to ever buy another pack again. I would still occasionally bum a cigarette off someone but I just refused to buy them. After a while it got old asking for a smoke and it just kind of died down. If I had cigarettes in my pocket I'd smoke them. Quitting is impossible if they are so easily accessed imo.

5 years later I still feel as if I'm addicted. I still crave them but haven't touched one for at least 3 years.

For what it's worth, I just quit cold turkey. Just a pack a day smoker. Hate being controlled by anything (just don't tell the wife I said that). When I saw that smokes were going up to a dollar a pack, I quit.
