i picked up a samsung ht-x40 home theater system . it sounds amazing on dvds but i cant get it to play aound from cable or ps3 . is it possible to do that without having to connect it through the headphone jack ?

how is it hooked up

you have to tell your ps3 what to use optical or RCA same with your cable box also since you have a surround system set the default to to dolby digital or dts. (dts is 20bit dolby d is 16 so dts will sound better crisper.)

also you have to tell your reciever what imputs to use.

if you get stuck let me know i installed surrounds for a few years.

how do you tell it what to use ? thats what i was trying to do i think . all i have connected is a hdmi cable . i have the cable and ps3 set to dts but no sound plays from the cable or ps3

I'm not to keen on the HDMI thing, but does it have audio with it or is it just video? Do you have a cable box/satellite box or is it just analog cable? If it's a box, you will need to send either composite or component video cables from the OUTS on the cable/sat box to the INs on the receiver usually under a TV/Sat input. Audio same way. If you just have regular cable, you need to send audio/video cables from the OUT on the back of the TV to the receiver IN.

you need a optical from the ps3 to the surround. digital coax or optical from the cable box as well hint if your cable box has didi coax you can use a yellow video cable they work the same and you cant tell the difference your dog might be able too but not your human ears. enjoy :)

thanks . i found out that i have to use a digital optical cable . right now i have regular rca'z from tv audio out to aux until i pick up some optical cables . one problem tho . i have to run a optical cable from dig out on the tv to dig in on the receiver but i also need to run a optical from the ps3 and 360 to the receiver i would think .so the problem is how am i gonna do that with only 1 optical port on the receiver . do they make like a splitter box to do that ?

im not sure about the splitter I have a $1100 reviever i have 4 opticals and 4 coaxs just look online prob the best bet

lucky for you I have this setup. Ready to hear how easy it is? HDMI from ps3 to tv. Optical from tv to reciever and that's it. HDMI delivers uncompressed audio and video from ps3 to tv and the optical will deliever the signal from tv to reciever. Just have your reciever set on auto and it will figure out on it's own if the signal is dolby digital or dts. If the bluray movie offers uncompressed digital sound, I recommend you set it up to that. The sound is phenomenal.

do you have a digital coax on your system your cable box should have one use that. you can get dolby d on alot of channels its nice.
