I have yet to invest in a torque wrench... never really needed one. Always borrowed one if ever needed. However, I'll be swapping out my motor soon and replacing the clutch, so I NEED to get one.

What do ya'll suggest and how much did you end up paying?

I dont really think it makes alot of difference, as long as its a good brand.

get the clicker type, dont get the kind that has the needle on it.

hey koji, dunno if you remember mine but it is a craftsman. i think i paid around 100 bones for it. its the clicker type and its warranted for life just like all their tools. just dont skimp and get a cheapo. youll kick yourself if/when you snap off a bolt or the thing just busts

Yeah, I faintly remember yours. Was that brand new price? What's the torque range on it?

Craftsman torque wrenches only come with a 90 day warranty. They aren't warrantied for life like the rest of their tools anymore. When I buy one I'll probably shell out the cash and buy a Snap-On. I don't like plastic parts inside a torque wrench.

Wrong. As Usual. Oh well... Anywho:

I would suggest getting a couple. You want a good lbs/foot 1/4 wrench and a good lbs/inch 1/8" or 1/4 one also. Having 2 makes it easier since torque wrenches aren't at their most accurate at the extremes of their measurements. Make sure they are the clicker types. I haven't had good luck with any of the less expensive electronic ones. And definitely not the needle type as above mentioned. I have never had bad luck with snap-ons or with craftsman either.

Good advice, bad sizes. ft/lb wrench should be 1/2" drive, in/lb wrench should be 3/8" drive.

Get a Snap On or Matco.

Theirs ARE warrantied for life, any someone above was right, Craftsman torque wrenches are 90 days.

I have 2 snap-on needle types. One is 1/2" (ft/lbs) and the other is 3/8" (in/lbs).
Inherited (stole) them from my old man. God knows how how old they are, but they still work just fine.

Aww, I should have thought of that excuse....

hmm, i wonder if theyd still honor mine..since it did come with the lifetime when i bought it.

at any rate, that was the new price, and its a 20-150 1/2" drive i havent price a new one. check out sears or like others suggested, snap on

If you have an older one, the will honor the warranty on it, but you will have trouble replacing the replacement if it breaks.

Me too, Stanley proffesional!! all the way.

Craftsman wont warranty the older ones either, I have one and know it for a fact. Snap on or matco are great, Craftsman if you dont have the cash. Each of my Snap ons are around 300.00 each and most hobbyists are not willing to shell out that kind of cash. Craftsman will work just take very good care of it.

Yea my Snap on 1/2" was $379 and my Matco 3/8" was $329 and Snap On 1/4" was $269.

What about SK, Armstrong, and Kobalt?

We sell all kinds of armstrong stuff. It is really good, and has a lifetime warranty.

SK Facom is also really nice tools. That is what a lot of F1/Indy teams use.

SK is a proto company. I think of Mac Tools or Matco, one of those guys.

Armstrong is a shit company IMO. They are only good for heavy industrial tools.

My dad got some crap from Autozone and it only clicks when it wants to it seems.

I've used a few Snap-on products, and those tools are effin solid.

I'd still get one with a needle on it for low torque applications.

The needle type are good for testing preload like in rear ends before you disassemble the differential, Situations like that, otherwise its a user choice. Needle type can be nice but leave more emphasis on the user's attention to the torque. Click type are simpler since all you do is feel for the click and move on. Both are just as accurate. depends on your taste.

For what it's worth; I bought the Snap-On clicker about 23 years ago. Cost around $100. Still using it and still going strong. I just had it checked out and recalibrated about 3 months ago. Old Snap-On FTW :bowdown

Snap On tools last forever, thats why they are they best plain and simple. Thats also why we pay a pretty penny for them!

I would have to say Snap-On is the best. 97% of my toolbox is Snap-On, and I would recommend using their tools if you can afford it. You will probably end up paying the same amount for the cheaper stuff if it breaks anyways.

I had a really nice Snap-on click ft/lb torque wrench. Loved it. Until it disappeared :(

I hate those damn tools that seem to grow legs and walk away. I was lookin at my snap-on shiznit last week, and I think somebody jack-moved my 10 and 12mm racheting wrenches!!!

It's all good I suppose...the Air Force "gave me" a lovely Snap-On digital interchangeable head torque wrench ;)

I dont like the digitals, they look cool however.

most of snap on's stuff is overpriced garbage. snap-on PRY OFF is what I always say. Their sockets and ratchets suck ass, ive used snap on tools for years in a shop atmosphere and once you find something that works better for you, you'll realize how retarded most snap on products are.

now, this is only concerning basic hand tools....

the snap on modis is my favorite tool in the box and I kill with it.

Just an update, I found a pretty good price on a cheap 50 to 250 FT. LBS. torque wrench. Its a HUSKY 1/2" from Home Depot. Spent $75.73 after tax and has a lifetime warranty unlike the Craftsmen torque wrenches; its a clicker type and I'll probably need the warranty since its made in Taiwan. I'll see how well it handles torquing 181 ft lbs. of torque when I re-install the crank pulley bolt after my swap.

Not bad, I guess. Anyone use one of these? I hope its not a piece of crap. :-o

Hate to bust your bubbles but Husky tools like that are plain junk. Return it before you use it and spend the money for a good torque wrench man. We told you Snap On or Matco, lol.

indeed... I bought a husky air sander w/ the lifetime warranty. After sending two back in the first year or so, when the third busted, it went in the trash instead of back to husky. crappy way to spend $50.

I've been using my am-pro that measures 20-150 lb/ft and i just bought another am-pro that does in/lbs today.

They work. That's all that matters. I'll upgrade when they decide not to work. Worse comes to worse, i'm out 20 bones per wrench.

Ampro, lol...thats from advance auto parts.

Any torque wrench works, problem is, are they accurate, NO, not usually unless they are a good quality.
