An R1 seems like an odd choice for such a trip. I'd love to do that though, but on a Gold Wing.

kinda neat but totally impractical. how much money did he spend on maintenance? how much money did he have to save up to replace tires, for oil changes, gas, etc without having an income? how did his fuel tank stuff work out. my bike only holds like 4 gallons at a time and i can hit around 150 miles on it, but traveling that far out into the middle of nowhere is going to pose problems unless you can carry a crapton of stuff with you.

Maybe he was sponsored? I can't think of any reason for anyone to do this otherwise.

Um... they make motorcycles designed for this sort of travel. Why the hell would you take an R1 or Goldwing on an offroad trip?!
