23702, How many of you have just packed up and moved....? Posted by ScreaminE, Apr-30-07 04:28 PM
...to somewhere you dont know a single soul?
I am recently single after a 3.5 year relationship and about to graduate in December.
Kind of depressed and just want to get away from this area (charlotte NC)
Two places of interest: Washington State (has an excellent DOT) and possibly AZ if Driggs hooks me up.
What kind of experiences have you guys had with moving?

Ahh crap, that sucks.
I've thought about it sometimes and if I had to move it'd either be SoCal (just look in the FS section on all the deals you're missing because you don't live there, lol) or Arizona. But, for now, I'm just stuck here...in Texas.

I moved to texas with a couple friends (who aren't my friends anymore haha) to attend college and I didn't know a single person within 1000 miles of me. It was a great experience as I met many wonderful people who are friends for life now. I say do it :thumbsup

Life is all about experiences.. Take the chances now.. because later you may not be able to. If you have nothing holding you down, this is your chance to experience new things. You can always come back.

I'd love to get out of this area. I have lived in the same city (near washington DC) my whole life. It's very expensive here but I don't want to leave my friends. People do it all the time and it wouldn't be hard to find a job no matter where I move but I'm being a wuss. jeff99gs moved from DC to Cali w/o knowing anyone in person and it has worked out great for him.

One vote for Washington State. Cyndi and I were thinking about doing that in a few years. Plus I could then put my Canadian citizenship to use.

Same, I'm packing up my shit and moving my ass south. I won't know anyone down there except the roommate i've breifly talked to on the phone a few times. Life is about making changes, and experiencing new things. It makes you a wordly person, and more intelligent in the end.
"Don't be too timid and squeamish about your actions. All life is an experiment. The more experiments you make the better.." -Ralph Waldo Emerson
It's true.. every word of it.. live to the fullest, and don't leave yourself ever wondering "what if". Take the chance, Charlotte, NC isn't going anywhere anytime soon, you can always go back.

I moved down to SoCal for a few months a few years ago. It was a 1 week decision and I'm super glad I did it. Didn't really like it and couldn't get a job (during dot come bust) and moved back to North Dakota.
Lately I've been wanting to move to a new country, mainly Oz.

here is a short version of my life
I worked for MTV I was production crew on the real world road rules challenge the inferno. TV is hard after that show I was talking to another crew person about a show called the rebel millionaire. (Richard Branson) 6 months nine countries 50000 in pay not too bad. I had the show and I was waiting for the job offer A week passes and nothing so I call my friend and this is what he tells me "dude we called you why didn’t you call us back " One of my housemates took the call and forgot to tell me. Because of that no show for me. I quit my normal job already and was moving out of my house. I had 4 housemates (big big house) only one asshole was the problem but no one would fess up to it. I couldn’t stay there people would die.
I had a friend who was moving to Hawaii so I said fu@k it never been there. Ill go no reason to stay here. Our girlfriends came too (that was easy honey wanna move to Hawaii)We got here with no money my friends work paid him 2 checks too many and 2 days before we moved here his old work yanked almost 3grand out of his account we had a week to find jobs get a house all that crap. It was the hardest thing I have experienced and im a better person because of it. I got a job working for sprint pcs. I quit there about 8 months ago and run a soon to be cingular/Att dealer store with plans to open 3 more in the next few months things are good here in Hawaii I hope to make 100k in the next year Its not production work but it pays the bills and im good at it.
My friend and his chick moved back to California But im still here with my chick of almost 4 years and I now live on a golf course. It was the most drastic move I ever made but also one of the best.
DO IT………………………….

Out of curiosity what part of the south are you moving to? I'm out here in Louisiana and there are a lack of 2gnt guys here.

Not that far south.. I would love to move to LA. I had a blast down there and definately high on my places to live someday. Just not now. I'm moving about 5 hours south to a (edit)big college in a small town.

You've got nothing tying you down, man. Do it.
This was my journey: Cleveland > Wichita > Seattle > El Paso > Detroit > El Paso > Heidelberg, Germany > Long Island > Wichita (all before I was a junior in high school). After spending some time in Wichita, I packed up and moved to Phoenix. Been here just over five and a half years.
I know it's hard for some people to fathom leaving friends and family behind, but this is your life! Get out there and explore! You know what the best part about moving is if you've got a big family? You get to invite them to your place for the holidays, or go home and be a big star, telling all the people who've never been outside of their county all about what it's like where you live now. If the move doesn't work out, you can just go home.
Malenko gave this a shot in the last six months, I believe. Where is that fool? :wary
My observations on this part of the world...
Phoenix - Awesome. There is no place else in the country like Phoenix. I guarantee it. You're half a day from the beack in SoCal. You're less than 10hrs drive to San Diego and Tiajuana if you want to get down. Vegas is an EASY weekend trip. We've got two drag strips here where you can pretty much race all year round. Everyone else does. There are local autox and HPDE forums, too, if you'd like to turn the steering wheel when you race. As for the weather, it took this midwestern boy over five years for the novelty of the heat to wear off, but the joy of the awesome weather the rest of the year more than makes up for it. Who's out here that you might know? Well, there's me, azdave, FlyinESi, L2RTSiAWD (Tuners admin), and boostedinaz (Tuners moderator) to name a few.
SoCal - Oh how I love SoCal. When you can sit in the sun on a Satuday afternoon in July and do a brake job thinking about how nice the weather is, you know you're not in Phoenix any more. If it weren't for the shitty traffic, the shitty roads, the shitty drivers, and the shitty CARB, I'd totally consider living there. I have so many good friends who live in SoCal that it's sometimes hard to drive back to Phoenix. Who's out there that you might know? Well, Juan, founder of this site is out there, Kaiser, SoCalRob, HipHop, ez, edxmon, and so many more that I feel like a choad for not mentioning. They've got the real Mitsubishi Owners Day. They've got every kind of sanctioned racing you could dream of, including rally and even drifting. SoCal has a lot to offer. Personally, I make about ten trips to SoCal a year. Maybe more than that.
Vegas - If you know Sean, you know he's got game. Game is what happens when you live in Vegas. I think I make it to Vegas about three times a year. Usually, it's for something that takes too much time to be able to look Sean up, but one of these days, we're gonna party up there because Sean knows how to party. Everyone knows a lot about Vegas, but get away from the strip and you'll find it's a pretty nice town throughout. Not to mention you're halfway to the next major city that comes to my mind.
Salt Lake City - If you're single and like hot blondes, this is the one city you need to visit. It must be the water. Ask any guy who's ever been to SLC and he will tell you, Salt Lake is full of hot blondes. The only catch is, it's a very relgious town as a rule. You can be there and not notice it, but once you spot the LDS culture, you can't miss it. There are churches everywhere and sometimes it can be hard for a heathen like us to fit in. Even so, SLC is a cool place. You've got those mountains for hiking and skiing, and there are two lakes nearby. Not to mention those salt flats out there. I don't know if just anybody can go do some top speed testing out there, but I'd like to find out! About the only 2GNTer I can think of out that way is Collente, but Nick's cool enough that he's all you need to know if you're up that way.
Portland/Vancouver - This is on the top of my list of places I might move to (aside from back to Germany) next. Arizona is awesome, but everything here is brown or shades of orange and brown. In Portland, everything is green. From the tops of the evergreens that line the mountains along the river to the bottom of turby's dank sack. It's all green. Portland has been recognized for having a first rate planning department that keeps things from becoming overcrowded (or feeling that way). There's awesome fishing in the river and you're halfway between the bay area in California and Canada.
Anyway, this is far too long, but if you're looking to learn more about a particular area, hit up the city-data.com forums. You can talk to people about different places and maybe even help out someone looking to move to your neck of the woods. Do your homework, but don't sell yourself short. Get out there and see the world while you still can.

I did the same thing. But I ended up having to move back because I couldn't find work. Of course the quality of the nugs in Eugene took away all my ambition to really look all that hard. :P

I really haven't let myself do much moving, b/c I've tried to finish school at the same place. That was my first priority. It's a bitch to transfer units and finish in 4 years. Almost moved to San Antonio, but my gf at the time found a knife to stab me right before that happened. But I took every chance to get out of the immediate area for month long rotations (LA, NorCal). I would go out every night the first couple weeks and by the end of the month, I would always know so many awesome people that I'd hate to leave.
I made the decision almost overnight to live in Japan for a while - but the job offer didn't come through. would have been cool though.

I packed up and moved on a 2 hour descision... I woke up one saturday morning after a night of drinking till I passed out. I realized it was starting to get out of hand and I was hanging out with the wrong people. A few hours later I threw a bunch of my stuff in my car and threw the rest of my stuff away and left NC for FL.
I lived with my dad for about 8 months while working at Disney Epcot until my car got repossesed. Then I packed up again, had about $300 on me, and bought a one way bus ticket to CO. I found a cheap apartment and got a job at the Acura dealership right across the street. I met my wife shortly after I got here and its been the best descision of my life. I own my own house, happily married (sorta lol), and have a great job.
Sometimes you just need to leave what you're familur with and start over. My life was going no where, so I left and started all over.
If you want to come to CO I have a room for you and an open space in the garage since my truck doesn't fit. lol
EDIT: my wife also has some cute single friends...

I've been thinking about it for the last few weeks. Fucking hate my job. Problem is ANYWHERE I want to move doesn't really give me an option to keep my cars. I'd be one at best, probably none.

I just got orders to go to Davenport Iowa, recently divorced after being together for 8 years and with a 2.5yo son. So I'm going to be alone and 900miles from the closest person i know, I feel ya its weird.
