I want one more than I want to eat right now!

I have always been a dirt rider and have been riding around on my friend's r6 for a little bit and I am hooked. The r6 WILL get me into trouble because it is not very forgiving above 8k RPMs. I have read nothing but good about the SV's and I think it fits a new street rider pretty well. Unlike most of my friends who have never even rode a dirt bike or street bike, I at least have SOME background so that makes me feel a little at ease.

$6500 out the door for a brand new 07 SV 650S. I think it is a good deal considering I've never owned anything new in my life. Thinking of paying $2k down and shooting for a payment between 100-120 per month. My parents are going to tell me I'm crazy and I'm gong to die but they used to ride a Shadow so they are going to be big hippies on this one.

I can scrounge up 120 bucks a months selling shower curtain rings if need be.

I purposely waited until I am about to graduate and have matured a little bit (I'm 22) about to have my BA in Civil Engineering.

Congrats on the Civil Engineering degree. As far as the bike (this is coming from a guy that doesn't ride but knows a lot of people who do), I too have heard nothing but good things about the SV, however I would suggest that you would be in a better position to pick-up an older model, say an '02 or '03. Reason being is you're talking about $6500 out the door and a quick search on Craigslist turns up early models between $4k and $2k. A lot of guys go out and buy a bike for the first time, then ride it for about 500 hours and decide it's not them, these are prime targets for guys like you.

That being said, $6500 isn't too steep, and if you like riding then it's probably a good bet. Good luck and safe riding.

P.S. There's a lot of guys on here that ride, one that comes to mind right off the bat is Cougar, so hit them up for opinions. Brand loyalty aside, your brothers are great sources of info.

and kudos to you for making the decision to keep yourself out of trouble on a faster bike. people dont understand a SS bike and a SS car are very different. you can be wrecked and gone in the blink of an eye on a bike..ANY bike...but much more quickly on a fast one.

enjoy, and if you get it, make sure and go take your local MSF course. dirt dosent teach you near what youll need on the street.

Buddy bought a new SV. Loves it, but you should get an older bike as your first bike in case you drop it or worse. Friend has been riding for a couple months but things happen and he dropped his bike. This would of been avoided by a more experienced rider. Good luck and be safe.

In all honesty, the SVS is a decent bike, but I wouldn't buy one new.

I'm pretty sure the body style changed in 04 (current body), and I'm almost positive you could pick one up for half that price. If you came up with $2k, you could get a bank to finance the remaining $1500 and have a super cheap payment.

As far as the R6 not being forgiving, any bike can and will kill you if you let it. You could hop on any bike right now and be just fine if you learn respect for self and bike. Once you get the 'I'm a good rider, I know this road' attitude, that's usually when it bites you in the ass.

The SVS is balanced and a lot of people use them on the track because of the amount of torque they have.

Anyway, here's all I'm saying:

Buy used, it will save you thousands of dollars in the long run.

If you want to learn to ride on the street (twisties), take the MSF course, get about 3000-5000 miles under your belt, then go to a track day (road course) that has instructional training. You'll learn more in that 8 hours at the track than any amount of time on the street, and you'll learn to respect street riding a lot more and probably won't street ride as much because you'll realize how dangerous it is.

I've been down twice and luckily walked away twice, and a really close call a third time that I probably wouldn't have walked away from. First time was the close call where I scraped the cement guard rail and almost went over the edge of a high-rise interchange (riding outside of my ability), second was me thinkin I was hot shit and straightened out a corner (again, outside of my ability), and third being t-boned by a car.

Most people aren't as lucky as me. I know a guy that lost the use of his left arm, a chick that got road rashed up and lost a part of her breast, and another guy that lost one arm and one leg, and several that had surgeries and out of work for months at a time.

Now, that being said, here's what I feel about the SVS's abilities. It has quite a bit of torque that's great for pulling out of corners faster than most i4 bikes (except 1k+). Since it's a V-twin, it has a power band that starts low and drops off too soon. It has enough to really get you going, though, I'm not saying it's a slow bike. The suspension, however, SUCKS (unless the 07's are different), you can't adjust anything. For your first few months, it probably won't matter, but getting the suspension tuned for your weight is probably one of the best things you can do on a bike. They are easy to upgrade, which is why I say buy used and use the money to upgrade the suspension.

i too like the sv's. what i really like about them is how veristle (sp) they are. you can opt to have the body panels for the more sport bike look. or you can go panelless (new word) for the street fighter look. again, it's almost like a lego. you can take pieces on and off as you go. it's a nice bike. you will not be disappointed. on a more serious note. this being your first street bike, i highly advise on buying one new. why it is put down upon us, bikers go down. i've been down on the street and the track. both times in gear with minor injuries. a used bike will save you some money and insurance. if you got any questions, do post up or pm some people. cougar and myself both should be able to help you out.

hey man, i also love the sv's, and probably at the end of the year will be looking for a used 1000s. cougar pretty much covered everything i can say about them, and like everyone else, i agree that you should buy used for your first street bike. if you buy one, I'll be really jealous. I've been looking at them since last fall, and went and checked some out at the dealership yesterday. they have 3 06s left over that they will probably let go for a good price. I would like to find a used one though, but there aren't any around me right now.

Just be careful. My housemate has a 06 gsxr 600 650? looks nice droped it his 2nd day going 5 miles an hour :) I will never let him live that down. Also my old boss got a 06 limited edition r1 and was to rear brake happy, locked it up sideways into a car 3 broken ribs a hip and one leg. almost 2 weeks in the hospital. Thats why I have a car.

i just went and got a quote for $6384 for a leftover 06. how is an 07 only $6500? Looks like I'll have to get a better deal before i think about buying one. My price is supposedly invoice price, plus tax and title... they dropped all dealer prep and freight fees.

I think the SV is out. A friend of mine is selling his 01 GSX-R 600 with 9k miles on it for $3500. The bike is mint with the exception of a scuff on one of the fairings, but I could care less about that.

I know a sport bike might bite me in the ass, but like said above, I just have to respect the power.

damn, that sounds like a pretty good deal.as much as I want an sv, I think passing that up would be hard. I'm having second thoughts about buying a new bike myself... i dunno what the hell I'm gonna do. :(

I love the superman headlight, I think that's my favorite body of the GSXR's, even thought I have an 04 600 in the garage.

For $3500, you can't go wrong. I think 01 was the first year it was FI, but I don't remember.

one thing that the v-twins and well, any twin (even paralell) have going for them on the street IS the low end torque. their a bit more friendly to ride rather than having to keep them way up in the revs like SS i4's, but you do have to watch that torque if you flog it off the line.

also you piked THE worst time to go bike shopping. if you want low low closeout prices you get yours towards the END of riding season, not the beginning. right now its warming up all over and riding season is just about in full swing. their sellin em like hotcakes so they sure arent gonna be trying to get rid of them by lowering prices much, the weather and appeal with do that for them.


while i love my little 500, a SS is in my future :D

i think i could probably get a better deal on an 06 sv now than i would have even at the end of last season. i dunno.

Supply and demand, and demand is high, not to mention a lot of people are/will be getting their tax returns. I try to never buy anything from January to May (unless it's wholesale that came in on trade). Best time to buy is like October-December. The people that only have a bike realize it was a bad idea for primary transportation, and others want/need money for Christmas.

I'd like to get a new one, but $6384 out the door is a bit more than I want to spend for a first bike. Not to mention it would be nice to just write a check for a bike so I don't have to have full coverage insurance, but the new one would be a lot to pay at once. DAMN IT, i'm getting pissed!

I still want an SV myself. I am trying to save enough coin to drop at one time so I can have cheap insurance as well. I've been checking ebay like a champ. Hopefully I can have enough saved before summer is over.

I think the GSX is getting sold. I suited up and took a ride on my friend's 01 r6 and I loved it! Rode all the country back roads up at his place and rode through the race shop business parks by his place.

yeah, i took care of that last year.

as much as I want a bike, I still want a GSX. In some ways the GSX seems more practical, since I could use it to commute in any weather, and keep the miles off my bike. Plus fast cars are fun, and it would make my family/girlfriend much happier if I had a fast car instead of a motorcycle. I dunno what I'm gonna do yet. It might come down to whatever I find a good deal on first.

i went to look at a guy's sv1000s today... a liiiiittle too much bike for me, but it was gorgeous!
