22493, Well I think I may be without the Eclipse for a while....
Posted by freelancefool, Mar-26-07 05:24 PM
So I decided to go on ahead and start my five speed swap this weekend. So far I have the motor and tranny sitting on the ground. Cam gears will be on it Wednesday as long as I have time after work. I also figured at this point I would do a lightweight flywheel and install the polyurethane bushing kit that I have here.

So far my expectations are that it will move under it's own power in the next two to three weeks as I only have a couple hours a night after I get off work. I intend on adding to the current write ups that we have here for the swap.

Why? Is your current tranny fuxored or are you just thinking for down the road when you are making more power and can actually benefit from the taller gearing?

the taller gearing in the neon tranny will be pretty much worthless to you if you are NA and making little power. Might even send your gas mileage down the crapper but don't quote me on that.

UNless you will be making gobs of power in the future i wouldn't worry about this swap for now.

Not using the Neon transmission. I want the shorter gears for better acceleration since I am NA. If I ever fork up the cash to pick up a turbo kit I might find a Neon tranny to swap in.

I'm planning on documenting everything for the swap. I didn't think about documenting the motor being pulled out the transmission though. Which I probably should have done. This is a mod that I figured you should be able to get the motor out without much help before you should attempt this. I'll probably document the cam gear install/timing belt install tonight. I'm sure it will help the masses.

Yea I do feel like my tranny is going to the crapper soon thought, plus they charge a shit load of money for any eclipse parts where I get my shit, makes me jelous of the honda guys... :cry

It can't be that bad. I'm sure if you look hard enough you can find a transmission for a reasonable price. I paid $400 for mine. It was working when it came out of the car and the seller tore it down for me to make sure everything was kosher.

So I got the cam gears installed. I'll have the write up later on tonight.

So the 5 speed swap is coming along nicely and I hope I never have to do this again. Figuring out how to get a drill under the dash to make holes for the slave cylinder sucked. I'm still taking pictures of everything as I go. I will hopefully have enough info to do a decent wiki writeup. I'll post more later.

Very nice. It really helped me picture a few things I was unsure about and I think will help when I pull my head in the next couple months

Good deal. I added a title and a quick aside about another way to steady the cam.

I figured they would be something under the valve cover, but I didn't bother to crack it open to find out. Thanks for the aside Dino. Also, I updated the fact you need to reverse the timing 1/2 tooth counterclockwise since I forgot to do that previously.

yep, this part was a pain in the ass. I ended up using an air hammer to bust thru the firewall from the outside, then drilled the hole wider and ground down the sharp edges. most ghetto thing ever lol. but it worked . mounting the master cylinder and clutch aren't any fun either, having half the studs on one piece and half on the other ;P

but damn what a difference. car feels fast, now I want those cam gears and some udp

One ghetto fool to another - good job! One question - it needs to be updated on the wikipedia just to clarify. When you say back off 1/2 tooth, does that mean the crank should go 1/2 tooth clockwise or 1/2 tooth counterclockwise? I remember when I did the belt and every time I would check if things lined up after two full crank rotations, it would be off a bit. So then I adjusted the crank ~1/2 tooth too. I just don't remember which direction the crank had to be turned.

It's 1/2 turn counterclockwise. I'll update it accordingly unless someone else wants to.

I hate myself right now. I started tearing down my suspension today for my polyurethane install. So pretty much all the ball joints are toast on the front end. I guess 145K miles is a pretty decent lifetime, but that's a lot of stuff to replace all at once. Inner/outer tie rods were all toast. I probably should have replaced all this stuff a while back though. Fuck I'm poor now.

If by the right tools you mean borrowing a shitty bearing press then yes I have the right tools.

So I got the Prothane poly kit done Sunday. By the time I finished up it was about 11pm. Hopefully this weekend I will have the rest of the suspension stuff in. Then I can start putting the car back together. Next week I should have the motor/5spd in the car.

Well barring my parts not showing up by Saturday. My car should run again. I really hope that I can get it back together. Otherwise I will be pretty upset. After it runs and I snap some more pictures I will start my writeup.

Fuck yes. Nikita is back and runs. Just have a couple of small things to finish up-clutch safety switch, brake light switch, speedo, etc.-and throw the hood on and she's done. It feels fucking amazing to drive her again.

Yea. It's an odd name for a tough car. Everything is complete under the hood. When it cools off some more I will put the center console back together and it will be done.
