20460, I'm sorry if this is in the wrong place Posted by dragon_void, Jan-29-07 01:25 PM
And I'm sorry if you've seen something like this before...
but they are starting to play the VW commercials again where they smash the eclipse. I own one, and I love it. This commercial outrages me, and if you feel the same way, I encourage you to write to VW. These commercials are disrespectful to Mitsubishi, to the individual creators of the car, and to the dedicated owners of the car. I also encourage you to tell any friends you may have with DSMs that do not have access to this site to write to VW. Thank you for your time.

VW is not making fun of, or disrespecting any other make or model in those commercials. They are, however, making fun of dipshit ricers who do more to embarrass and discount the worth of the entire sport compact performance community through the hack-fucking of perfectly good cars.
Hell, my DSM is probably going to be sporting an "UNPIMPD" license plate inside of a month. :thumbsup
EDIT: You get an F.

EDIT2: You've been a member here for over a year and this is the only post you've made? How can you be so adamant about the image of the DSM and it's owner, but not bother to associate with the rest of us?
Chances are good you won't even be back to reply, but have a nice day, anyway.

That's the best commercial on TV in a long time.
I will probably buy a GTI or A3 soon, and every time that commercial comes on it reminds me how cool the GTI is.
VW is making fun of all the dumbshit ricers that deface our cars, butcher them, and raise our insurance rates because they can't afford a fast enough car to satisfy their overblown ego. I would have been happier if they'd launched the owner off the trebuchet, but whatever, its still funny.

To the person who said I do not belong here.
I am a female and do not have much knowegle of cars, that is why I don't post. I have nothing of value to give you. I love my car and come to this site to learn about it; that is why I am a member. I love all DSM's, even the ones that are "rice." I have to leave for a class, and I will be back another day to finish this post.

Your view on cars is a little skewed. You should love all fun cars, regardless of make, as long as they aren't rice. Not just DSMs even if there is rice.

Wait, hold on... did someone say female!?!
Anyways, you'll get over it R, it's all just fun and games and no reason to take offense. The commercial takes cracks at a wide variety of car makes, I even think there's one with a Mustang (but don't quote me on it), it's just a marketing ploy aimed at enthusiasts that are more performance minded or prefer the lines of a stock car.
The guy's that have chimed in, myself included, are more on the purist side. Poorly chosen wings with dragging bodykits and cheap exterior modifications made for the sole purpose of attracting attention to the individual without demonstrating enough interest to put effort into their decisions is frowned on. This isn't about performance, it's about having enough pride in your vehicle and yourself to give a damn and not reflect poorly on the community as a whole. That is a large part of why these commercials work, it appeals to a part of us that is so frustrated with the buzzing, guady, blowhard in the next lane with the triple decker 'wang' and polyeurethane genitals hanging off his car, that we are actually angry. A lot of that anger stems from the anti-social stereotype associated with the "F & F" crowd that draws negative attention to the sport compact community as a whole, therby hindering chances of acceling to a socially acceptable position and no longer being thought of as 'punk kids'.
and you have to admit, they are some pretty poorly modified vehicles.

Well, I don't believe I said you didn't belong here. If I did, then I apologize for that. Your being female and not knowing much about cars is an acceptable reason to be a bit shy in posting here, especially with the way these guys always seem to turn into a bunch of drooling, uncouth hound dogs when they discover a member is a woman. ;)
You say you have "Nothing to offer." I disagree, strongly, in fact. You love all DSMs and you visit this site to learn more about them. By your spending time on this site, you gain that knowledge you currently lack. It's okay if you're not looking to rebuild your engine from top to bottom, turbocharge it, install a full stand alone, and aim for ten second quarter-mile times. If you just want to poke around to learn how to install speakers or maybe figure out what suspension to get for your daily driver, that's perfectly fine.
The thing the really disappointed me was not that you feel so strongly about DSMs that you felt the need to suggest others let Volkswagen know so much, but that I see that you feel so strongly about DSMs and you've been a member for so long, yet have never so much as asked a question elsewhere on the board.
Sure, there are times when the people here can be pretty harsh, but we're working to get beyond that. We've got a Site Support Team now that actively looks for people who need help and strives to help them out. It is our goal to be more than a website with technical information, but to provide a sense of community to our members where they can not only learn more about their cars, but network with other enthusiasts across the country establish solid friendships and maybe even professional working relationships which serve to improve their quality of life, in general.
So if you really care that much about DSMs, want to learn more about your car, and have that burning desire to positively represent the DSM community, we would encourage you to make an effort to participate in the forums. Even if you just ask questions to start. Eventually, you will find someone asking a question you can answer and, on that day, you will be able to walk away from the computer knowing you helped another DSMer. And that feels pretty damn good.
Five years ago, I knew how to change my oil and install cool blue headlights in my Talon. Today, I know there's nothing I can't do to my car (given the desire to actually bother) and I sorta run this place. It's all about participation. We need all the people who care about DSMs and 2GNT that we can get.
Hope this gives you some more insight...

LOL, this reminds me when I introduced a girl to this board a few years ago, and she got scared off after one post because everybody jumped at her. ha
out of curiosity, why is dragon's post count 0, even after at least 2 confirmed posts in this thread?

Pits posts are not worth a count to the overall post count of a user.

Finishing my previous post...
Personally, the body of my car is stock. When I see someone driving around with a body kit that looks like shit, I feel sorry for them. I know they are poor like me, and they are just trying to fit into a community that they admire. I would never go the route they did, but I have slightly better judgement and probably even less money.
When it comes to that Eclipse on the VW commercial, yes it is extreme and quite gaudy, but I don't consider it rice. That car has a paint job that is probably worth more than my whole car. I consider it art, and it belongs at car shows. I would hope I would never see it at a race, though. I am an artist, so I have more respect for something like that than you may have.
I do not ask questions, because I prefer to research online if I want to know something. On another board, I asked a question, and I was told to sell my car and by a GST. That is why I am here. The majority of questions I have are something you all have heard before, so I don't have to ask.
I am not telling anyone to do something that they don't want to. My post was for those that were already offended. I feel there are other ways to market a product without destroying a competitor's product. You don't have to agree. I'm probably already biased, because I originally had a strong dislike for VW. I hate Beetles, and I would like to see them all compacted into a cube.
