They are Hindu symbols. From what I understand they mean something to the effect of good luck and fortune. I believe that Hitler adopted that symbol and for its meaning but because of what he did, that symbol turned into one that symbolized hate and evil.
India is absolutely amazing. But at the same time it's absolutely disgusting. Where my parents live it's a gated community, 3 story houses with all marble floors and spiffy interiors, but once you leave the neighborhood you'd see a tent city.
There is NO concept of waste management there, trash is thrown everywhere! You can see people taking a crap on the side of the road, people just piss where ever they want to.

Baby elephant. That thing was 13 days old when we went there. I was watching something on elephants over there because only Animal Planet and National Geographic channels were in english and elephants don't have full control over their trunks for quite a while. Anyway, when we got there, the thing had the trunk stuck in it's mouth hacking and gagging because it didn't know how to get it out!

I agree. The higher castes don't have to worry about meals, but for the most part, people are just surviving and it's accepted because of that system.
It's strange, people there claim to be so civilized but even the "higher class" people feel comfortable enough to be pulling this stuff. But, I'll quote one of my sisters here and confidently back her statement... "One man's trash is another's house". My father has even had to put a policy in place "do not wash feet in sink" where he works.
I think if the caste system was abandoned and the government actually backed some of the policies put into place like the U.S. does, India would be an extremely nice country.
I should not make any assumptions about the entire country because we only went to 2 of their states, Andra Pradesh and Kerala, but those two are dirty. Their highways are what we would consider a very bad country road. What would take us 45 minutes between cities (45 miles straight line highway) takes about 4-5 hours because of the shitty curvey roads (potholes and hairpin turns).
I love that country, because of the sights, but it seems as if these people have no true understanding of what they have and don't really care. That country is so alive and vibrant, but all of the trash and stuff everywhere ruins it.
