I'm looking for a new guitar.

Right now I have what my fiance bought me for my birthday last year... A Fender Stratocaster Squire (I guess the top version of the Squire?). It sounds good, looks alright (I hate the headstock). But I want something more.

When it comes to guitars I'm pretty limited. Fender, Ibanez, Dean.

I REALLY want a Dean Razorback guitar, but I don't think they make them left handed. I was thinking of getting the MLXL, hell, it's only $300, and if I liked it enough, put some EMG or Seymore Duncan pickups in it.

The Fender that I have, although a meer Squire, sounds awesome! It hit's certain tones that my fiance's Ibanez and Jackson can't do, but I want something different. With a distortion pedal it just doesn't sound right. And with the music that I like, it just doesn't sound right. She could plug in and play the same exact thing as me and it will sound different (granted she has the double humbuckers and I have the 3 single coil pickups like the normal Strat).

Any leftys out there with any advice?

Actually, any advice or reccomendations from anybody? I'm just saying that I like the look of the Dean guitars, but I'm a fan of the Jackson headstock (and sound). Ibanez... eh. I'd love a Paul Reed Smith, but I don't have that much money.... That is a beautiful guitar just by how it looks.

And, no, I'm not just looking for looks, I'm looking for good sound.

I play a Larrivee D-03 with a LR Baggs I-beam pickup. Acoustic only. :)

You could always buy a right handed one and restring it for left hand but then all controls would be at the top instead of bottom :shrug

I am left handed, but I really sat down and thought about it when I started playing guitar eight or nine years ago and realized that your fret hand needs to be the good one and if I have more control with my left hand, why would I use that as a picking hand?
So I play right handed guitars. I've had my Dean for a long, long time now and still like it just as much as the day I got it... its a 7 string, model unknown now hahah but it was just over $800 in the heyday of the 7 string guitar.
Its got a really dark sound, sounds amazing for lamb of god/opeth type stuff, but when you start to play led zepplin (white summer/black mountainside or achilles last stand) it doesn't sound amazing. passable, great if you know how to squeeze every last bit out of the guitar, but not amazing in the Statocaster or PRS kind of way.

Love my Ibanez.I've had it for 8 months now, and I haven't even thought about pulling the pups out of it once. I thnk it's an RGT220HSL? (from memory sitting in my hotel room). One thing I've found though, most of the time a $300 guitar sounds like a $300 guitar. YMMV.

Ok, I'm keeping the Fender for when I want nice and clean sound, but I'm thinking of going for the Dean for the darker sounding stuff. As for the $300 guitar sounding like a $300 guitar, that may be true, but if I get bored and want something different, I'd just change the humbuckers (hell, $200 for the pair).

I have one question... on the Dean MLX's, do they have a place for a whammy bar?

whammy bars are overrated. Get a bolted on neck, and just torque on it. With a whammy bar, you tend to get out of control doing stupid shit that doesn't sound all that cool, and then your guitar gets ridiculously out of tune even with fancy tuners. You can accomplish almost the same thing with creative use of bending, and pulling back and forth on the neck. Plus I think it looks cooler, when I hit a big note, and then push the headstock forward half an inch to get that wicked bend.

I never thought of doing that, but personally, I don't want to try, well, now that you tempted me, I'll try it on the Fender tomorrow.

Yeah, I've heard that about the tuning, and yeah, it's true. BUT... I've also heard that if you add another spring or two you should be fine. I don't use the bar much, but you never know.

EDIT: Now my main issue, I'm stuck here... Dean or Jackson? I'm looking for the darkest sounding and the most responsive to distortion. I know how much that Dean costs, but the Jackson is unknown (not listed).

Yea, whammy bars are gay.

In all seriousness, however, I prefer Ibanez or Fender when I play electric. Ibanez is good with distortion and Fender has a nice crisp sound in clean. Dean is "ok" and Jackson's are good for absolutely wailing on the guitar (soloing), so whichever is more practical, go for it.

I know the pain of being a left handed person. Finding everything sucks. But just remember, us laft handers will ALWAYS be able to wank and use the mouse at the same time. =)

They all have different tones and feels, just look around until you find what fits you. I wouldn't put alot of stock in just changing pick-ups either. Sure it's different but not always better. I've had it go both ways.
