10347, my dsm got me a job
Posted by EclipseSix, Jun-05-06 05:18 PM
So I was working on the suspension (lowering struts and springs) about a month back, and I got stuck trying to take off the sway bar link, ended up dremeling the shit out of it, and my dad didn't think I was going to make it past this task so he gave a friend of his, a mechanic, a call. The guy, Kevin, comes by (by which time I had gotten the sway bar link off and moved on) and takes a look around at my work and mentions he needs people at his work. Well I certainly needed a job (6.50/h wasn't cutting it at Ace Hardware), and he offered it to me on the spot. But I have no mechanical experience at all, and the owner of his shop wouldn't let him hire me (its just a valvoline quick lube shop, a lot like jiffy lube), but they just were sold to another owner (1000 times better owner at that), and he gave me the job yesterday. So now I have a better paying job, mostly due to 2gnt's search feature and my DSM :-P :thumbsup

Does anyone have anymore questions about the problems DSM'ers have at Jiffy Lube?

haha damn that did sound bad, but i meant on my resume. trust me I know my way around a car, its just I have no 'official' experience on my resume in the industry. And not to mention its not like changing oil and refilling windshield wiper fluid takes a first rate mechanic. Just takes someone with half a brain and some courtesy and respect of the car.

The cool thing is, I can build a lot off of this. Valvoline holds seminars all the time where I can learn new things and gain more experience, and this will help me get into the industry farther. And I needed money, so :thumbsup

also i watched that thing on jiffy lube, and i can tell you first hand that this place almost never does this (I have yet to witness it). I have personally been doing everything we say we do on every single car. Today we went through sooo much trouble to change an oil filter that waas such a pain in the ass. Plus the guy I work with knows his shit, and my boss knows even more. Plus this shop is owned by a auto repair/performance transmission shop in the same parking lot area.

So I've been there two weeks, I love the job! Making 300 a week (which is great for a 19 year old in college), and they're considering me for an assistant manager position.

Not to mention I visited their homepage and saw this image.... That looks like a talon or an eclipse, doesn't it??

I watched that thread before I ever got the job, and I'll give you a no-bull response. We have a box full of jiffy lube stickers (the ones they put on your windshield telling you about the next service date) and other auto places from people who switch to us, and roughly 75% of our daily business is from repeat customers. We have people coming from 30-60 miles away just for a full-service oil change from us because we "do good work". Our manager is strict as hell with us, and they already fired one guy for leaving an oil cap off on a car. That car came back after it lost half a quart, our manager refunded him the money, redidd the oil change, pressure washed the engine bay, vacuumed the interior, and gave him a ticket for 10% off services for life, and since we're owned by the repair shop next door that customer has 10% off everything that he could ever need for his car.

Its a pretty sweet job, I love it so far like I said. I had to tear into an engine the other day to find a coolant leak, so we definitely do a lot more than your average oil change. I work with a fellow ex-DSMer, he used to own a 1g GSX and another guy who works there used to work in a trans repair shop so everybody is pretty knowledgeable there. I've yet to see one car leave without having everything done to it that we say we do (ok ok, maybe a few got out without a windshield wash....)

I was just messin' with ya. When you said that you'd be working at a jiffy lube type place it reminded me of that thread.
