9492, What the hell happened to my tires???
Posted by Skillionaire, May-20-02 05:29 AM
Ok I Purchased 18" wheels about 6 months ago. The tires on it were used but in very good/almost new condition. My car is lowered so after I put the new wheels on, I had a camber kit done and the alignment as well. A few days ago, while driving in wet weather I noticed that i was having some BAD traction problems, especially in the rear. Today while washing my car, I noticed that the inner half of both rear tires were nearly bald!! I couldnt believe it. The camber is the back is actually straighter than the front, but the front tires are fine. WTF is going on? The tires are Nitto NT555s 225/40 - 18. Treadwear 300. I just had to order two new ones for $128 each and id like to find out what the problem is before i tear through them also. tia

Camber problem, Alignment Problem, did you install the camber kit your self?, if not it would be wise to see if it installed, and about the alignment do it again and ask how many degrees are off spec, maybe you do have a camber kit just not enough.

I had a shop do the kit/alignment for me. Im gonna take it back there and have them check it out. This cant be right. Doesn't make sense that the front is fine but the back is so bad.

Actually for our cars the back is the problem, you should have seen this guy driving in town , with a 4" drop the back tires look like ass, very very horrible camber problem.

On stock suspension we have a little negative camber, when you lower it, there is that much more negative camber. Even with a camber kit, there is some camber wear but why it happened in 6 months I don't know. I would get an alignment after getting the tires and see how far off the back is. Good luck bro.

Im gonna raise my car up tomorrow (coilovers) and then wait for the new tires to get here. I had planned to raise my car for a while now and this finally gives me a good reason. I just dont get how it could have gotten so bad so quickly. Especially with the rear wheels looking so straight. Im gonna see if i can get that shop to align my car for free since i just had it done in March.

It has to be the alignment/camber. I got one when i put my springs in and then another after about a month, giving the springs time to settle. It was off when i went back the second time.

I do not know if this is the problem, but I remember reading somewhere (I don't remember where, I'm trying to find it) that is MIGHT be you are running too much toe in on the rear tires, and that it is not necessarily bad camber (but that can cause the inside of the tire to wear too)

Now, I could be totally wrong. I'm trying to find where on earth I read this.

Yes toe can affect the tires and give you bad wear. Take it back to wherever you had the alignm, ent doen and check all specs vs. stock specs and see how far off everything is.

Una salus victus.

Yes, bad toe will eat up tires quicker than bad camber. But bad camber will eat up the tires all by itself, but over a greater time. Now bad camber along with bad toe, will destroy your tires rather quickly...which is what prob happened to your car..

toe in causes outer tread wear. toed in looks like this / \
may be a toe problem but i don't think it's toed in.
