I have seriously illegal tread runnin' on my stock 16" rims now so I need to get new rubber. I figured while I was at it I would upgrade to 17"ers Problem is that I'm up near Chicago. Do you guys that have to deal with snow run different wheels/tires in the winter? What setup do you run in the winter... is it different than in the summer? Is there are preferred tire that has a decent performance, but will give some grip in the snow?

If I do run 17" all year round and can find a decent tire... Is there anything that I should stay away from with new rims that will run in the winter. I imagine that a rim with any steel would be a horrible idea cuz they would rust. I'm interested in getting white rims... would the white come off? What should I stay away from if I'm going to run them in the winter.

completely different set of wheels for winter snow.. low profile tires will not grip in the snow.

Tim where around Chicago are you? I'm out in the Downers Grove area.

If I drove here through the snow I wopuld put back on my 14's and drive those. Even though my Potenzas probably have better wet and snow traction than my stock tires. I would do it to save the wheels. Now I have another intended purpose for the 14's.

you should definetly get snow tires. michelin makes one of the best studless snow tires available. it's called the arctic alpin. it last about 4 seasons is W rated i beleive. the other one is the bridgestone blizzak. it will last 2 seasons asa snow tire and after that it's considered an all season tire

They rock, except I was mad this season cause they stick so well in the snow I couldn't do donuts or ebrake slides all the way around. even on Ice they are awesome and the ride is great I still have them on just incase, in the rain they are great too

Ok... so I need to run separate wheels and tires in the winter.

What size wheels do you run for the winter? Are the snow tires expensive? I've got 16" wheels, but I'd buy 14" for the winter if it was cost effective (cheaper tires).

I live and work in Schaumburg. My lease is up at the end of June and I'm looking for a new place. I want to move to downtown Arlington Heights (cool bars and stuff to do, but there isn't the awful commute and you can still have a cool ride... not like downtown). We should all get together at Hooters for wings and beer and then cruise the streets of woodfield when it gets warmer. I know some Honduh guys that go to Chinatown and stuff all the time, too.

Another thing that I'm doing is taking a summer - night class at the College of Dupage on engine building just for fun. I think it starts in June or something. It would be sweet if there were some 2gnt'ers who would take the class with me.

Last winter I kept my wheels on but if it snowed more than a couple inches I was pretty much stuck. Next winter I plan on sporting the 14s.
