8942, Grinding sound from driver side only.... Posted by eclipsekaiser, Apr-25-02 10:32 AM
Everytime I turn right only, and apply throttle, a clunking sound always occurs from the driver side. It gets louder when the turning speed is faster. I can also feel the grinding through the brake pedals as well as when my hand is on the shift lever of my AT.
Any idea on what this might be. Ball joint recall has been done.
tonight I'll go back down there to make sure every thing is in place.
Mods, include RSR on KYB Gr-2s.
thanx.

sounds like a CV joint going bad. Check your rubber boots at the axle shafts, both the one at the wheel, and the inner one by the tranny. If they are torn open at all, water gets in there and destroys the cv joints. Could also be your brakes, or a wheel bearing..

that is what I was thinking...CV ging bad. Never replace it yet.
Could also be the brakes as well. 54K on stock rotor and stock pads from day one way back in 1/97
I'll chekc to find out.

Just check out the driver side steering components....
CV boot looks okay. There are no visible indication of tears. Sames goes for the boot near the transmission.
All suspension components look good. I'm going to swap the components from left to right and vice versa to see if the sounds will transfer over to the other side. that way I can rule out suspension parts. However the KYB has been through some off roading and drifting action.
Brakes are still the factory POS. It has over 54k on both stock rotors and pads. can this contribute to the grinding? (note no brakes were used to induce this noise, only throttle)
Wheel bearing... easy to change? or pain in the ass.
any input is appreciated.
thanx.

A wheel bearing isn't too bad. You hafta disconnect all of the suspension arms and the tie rod end. I would try to seperate all of the ball joints except the lower lateral arm, which I would unbolt. Remove the cottor pin from the axle nut, and back the axle nut out. Hammer on the nut until the axle pops out of the hub. Big hammer helps, just don't hit a stud. Once the axle is out, there will be 4 bolts on the back of the spindle. Remove these, as they hold the hub/wheel bearing in place. Replacement wheel bearing is 112.50 from Conicelli (www.partznet.com). Bolts back up. A bit of a bitch ass job, but it isn't too bad. -=B-=
