hey guys.. well i just ordered my KYB GR2 shocks and struts set.. i know they are not adjustable, but thats what i have the money for right now.. but anyways.. i dropped my car on Arospeed Coilovers, about 2.5 inches... and my shi** is bumpy and bouncy as hell.. when i get these shocks installed will this help reduce this out?? please let me know.. thanks...

I dont think it will make a major difference in the way it feels. The reason the ride is harsh on coilovers is because of the spring being used in them. The spring is not compressed and it is small so it has room to travel when you hit bumps and makes the car jump around. The stock springs give a nice ride cuz they are compressed (front) and will bounce back quickly and softley.

So in order to get a better ride change the springs but that will restrict the adjustabilty of the coilovers.

I'm pretty sure that the GR-2's are an OEM replacement. I've heard that they are a little stiffer and stock shox though!!!!

I have the same set up and I bounce around like hell. I just figured out the problem with the coil overs.

are you having problems with your shocks hitting? I mean like where the spring sits and where the pole comes out of the shock?

How did you set up your coilovers. Big springs in the back and the smaller ones in the front?

i set it up with the longer springs in the front and the smaller ones in the back.. is this wrong?? please let me know.. some guy said i might be riding on my bumpstops, and this is why my suspension is like shi**..

when I called arospeed they told me the small ones go in front, and thats how I have it, but my shock was bottoming out but I fixed it. Give arospeed a call and tell me what they say.

From what i've been told, and a few others have also heard, is that our stock shocks are made by KYB. They are a step below the GR-2's, and the turbo 2g acutally have GR-2's. And if they don't say GR-2, than the internals are the same.

GR-2 stiffness is essentially the AGX's set at 1 (softest). They are not designed for lowered cars because shorter springs signifcantly increases the amount of stress on the shock. The actual exterior of the shock has a smaller diameter than the AGX which could be a problem for those using coilovers. The bigger the diameter difference between the shock and the coilover sleeve, the greater the risk of that sleeve moving, causing rattling. I understand money is an issue for most people, but i recommend adjustable shock for everyone now, stock spring, or lowered. The ability to tune/adjust ur suspension anytime u want is worth the extra money to me, its like getting multiple shock in one.

Sorry, i got a little off track in my last response. To answer ur orignal question elude, ur bumpy ride could be caused by a couple different things, depending which kinda bump it is specifically.

Chances are that if u've been lowered 2.5" ur stock shocks are probably blown by now. They shouldn't last more than 6 months at that height. That would be a bouncy ride with a possible 'bump' occuring when ur car bottoms out the strut internally.

I'm not familiar with the Aerospeed coilovers, but if they are a fix rate spring like most of the coilovers i've seen, you bump complaint might be caused by a lack of gradual stiffness increase attributed to fixed rate (non progressive) springs. This 'bump' would be an initial blow at the moment the wheels hit the unsmooth road. The stiffer the shock, the more violent this will be.

The bumpstop bottoming out is a pretty distinctive 'bump'. This occurs with a slight delay after the moment of impace with the road and wheels. This one sounds the most violent as the car is going down and it halted by the shock itself. The softer the shock, the more this will happen.

I recommend GR2's for people using Skunk2 coilovers because they fit fine (the skunks will fall off of tokiko nonadjustables). Also, I head the AGX spring perch is harder to get off. And the AGX in the front is one inch longer than stock, giving you less travel, so RRE highly advises against getting AGX for the fronts.
