I've seen the numerous posts on the ball joints and I had the recall done last fall so I think I can rule them out. I had the same noise before I put on new brake pads & rotors, new wheels & tires, new struts and springs so it's not any of those causing it either. I's coming from the left front wheel area and is most noticeable on deceleration I guess. It is a type of deep whurring sound, it's uneven, getting a little louder and quieter while going the same speed. I'm thinking that it is a wheel bearing problem? Anyone have this type of problem before and what were the signs of trouble. It's on a 99 RS with 50,000 miles.

it could be the rotor metal covers that surround the rotors.. it may be rubbing, if it is, just try and bend it out a little.

You mean the black, metal dust cover behind the rotors right? If so, I checked all that when I did the suspension and everything looks good. Also, the noise has a deep sounding tone and isn't a metalic or metal on metal sound. I can't think of what to compare it to really.

It's very likely it could be the wheel bearings. A couple years ago while riding in my dad's truck, we heard this whirling droning sound, it sounded like a plane was overhead. Then a few miles later the front driver's wheel popped off and we were lucky we were only doing about 20mph. Turned out to be wheel bearings.

Yeah wheel bearings could be true, but don't our cars have hubs and cv joints. it could be ones of those, you know. cv joints are easy but it is more economical to buy a whole rebuilt axle. I think we have reg. style bearings and spindles on the back( those are easy, too ), but I wouldn't have a clue as to how to change the bearings on the hub(without getting a new hub).

I just had the wheel bearing(s) changed in my front passenger's side wheel. WHenever I drove over 20 mph there would be a very deep, droning, grinding noise coming from the wheel. It almost sounded like a deep loud intake sound. The only problem was that Satan had to rip apart my axle to get the bearing out, so I had to replace the axle also.

20 bucks on the lug nuts for not being tightened... happened to me tonight almost got in a fucken accident... so i went to autozone and got a 4 way for 6 bucks and tightened dat shit and now its all better

yeah check your lugs and both of you go to a garage and look at your studs with the wheel off. wheel bearing will cause a vibration in the steering wheel. start with lugs. if they're tight wiggle the wheel around left to right and up and down. if it has play all the way around and it feels about the same than call it your wheel bearing
