4258, FUCKED UP COILOVERS NOOOOOO
Posted by mrlocalpimp, Nov-25-01 08:10 AM
Yeah i fucked em up. i installed them the best i could and today i went to take the car out for the first time and EVERY slight bump on the tire makes a loud CLUNK on whichever side the bump came on. this is going slow like 5-10mph. it sounds and feels like it would if the top of the strut thing was hitting the underside of teh hood. its not tho, i checked. but thats what it sounds and feels like on both sides. as if theres no softness for the bumps just clunk. please help!!!!! i only did the fronts and this sucks!!!!!

hmm it seems as if the sleeves aren't correctly mounted onto the shock. I really don't know how to install the sleeves though because I bought mine use and installed already. I think your suppose to glue or weld the sleeve onto the shock. My bad ones make a clunkety sound when I got over bumps sometimes. I lowered my car with a jack really slow and looked at it and I see the sleeve move when it starts to compress so it could be that the sleeve is hopping up and down and stuff.

Actually, a lot of coilovers DO make a lot of noise. That's what a lot of people complain about, such as the clunking when going over bumps. But you should double check that everything is tight when the car is on the ground. Make sure you used those rubber O-rings to center the coilover collar onto the shock. And just look at the Ground Control faq at http://vfaq.dsm.org and you shoudl at least get an idea of the order in which all the components go....good luck.

BTW, my fronts don't make noise, but my rear does, like a loud clunk whenever you go in a driveway at an angle. It's because one side gets really high, so the spring is kinda hanging there, and then when it levels out, the top metal collar lands on the spring.

trust me theres NO WAY this is the normal clunking coilovers make. its loud and you can literally feel it. its almost like im getting no bump absorbment at all. i didnt even use an o-ring for the metal adjustable thing. oops. am i supposed to? it was on VERY solid. i guess i take it out and put in the o ring. i had no instructions so, i used the g-control faq the best i could. ill try the oring but its like i have no absorbment over bumps. anyone got more ideas?

btw whats the sleeve? is that the adjustable metal part?

Yes, the collar aka sleeve is the adjustable cylinder where you can move the perches up and down. Make sure that is on there REALLY tight. Use the rubber o-rings on the top and bottom of the collar, and use as thick an o-ring as possible. You will have to squeeze it in there with a screwdriver (i used my keys).

Basically, make sure that collar is on the shock very tight, then make sure you have cut your bumpstops (yellow things) in half, so it's half the height. Make sure you put back the stock pieces that you can use at the top, like the Ground Control FAQ. Good luck.

Just wondering...

Heres the update-

No, DID NOT cut the bumpstops. Explain why this is important. Ill definately do it soon, as ill try anything, just wondering can this be the prob? What does cutting them do.

Also, i jacked the car up maybe 3 inches and looked into the coilover/springs. I notice that somethig, either the spring or the collar, has tilted and so the springs are making un-moveable contact with the collar. So one of those tilted. Help help.

FYI I kept the stock spiral rubber thing that is connected UNDER the top cap thing, the thing that has the 3 bolts that attach to the top. Does this spiral thing knock out? Is it important?

THanks guys! Youre really helping, pelase dont stop!

i took the top ruber thing off, didn't seem like i would need it.
as for the clunking.... mine did that for a while until if figured out what it was. mine was just on the front. even though the instructions said not to tighten the top strut bolt (the bolt that would realize the strut that you can see in the engine bay) you need to tightned it down all the way. it was the loose bolt tapping away on the metal with loose bolt.
