today i got my lower lateral control arm/ ball joints replaced (recall)

the mechanic said that my cv ball joints needed to be replaced. they want 200 dollars per side and 200 dollars for labor....does this sound right? I know its Satan, and their prices are ridiculous, but thats not my concern right now...
im wonderin, since my car hasnt shown any serious problems (they said eventually it will start clicking when i try to turn) how bad is it, how long can i stick with my current ball joints, and what price (Non-Satan) am i looking at? Anyone had their cv joints replaced???

That's not a surprising, each axle is probably around $120, plus an hours labor they are charging to install... If you wantto save the money replace them yoruself. It's not a very hard job at all.

yeah, I've heard they're not too bad of an install....and if they're not clicking, you don't really need them now. they probably just noticed a crack in your cv boots.

Dude you can just rebuild the boot if it is just cracked, I should rephrase that you can replace the boot! :) Also are you sure he meant CV joint and not the lower ball joints. They are two entriley different things, dont let a mechanic screw you! If it is the lower ball joints you can get those replaced for free by mitsubishi(there was a recall). I got both mine replace and got them to throw in the CV joints for free. I had a mechanic freind tell em "due to stress caused from the worn ball joints the cv joints need replacement". If you got a mechanic freind go for it. :)

hehe good ol' cv joints.. well for one that sounds rediculous.. i doubt you would have to get the whole joint replaced... like someone else said there might just be a crack in one of the boots, which is better cause then all you would have to do would be to replace that boot. im not sure on the cost of exactly how it would be done, but im sure you can do it yourself of with the help of a friend. but for some funny info... my car before this one was this 87 olds cutlas ciera with well lots of mile on it and i drove it around for like 1yr and a half with a broken boot and also with the clanking of a failing cv joint (didnt know what it was in the beginning) i drove a ton with it clanking and luckly i was ok.. but i would say that if it isnt clanking when you turn you should be ok and might as well inspect them yourself to see if the boot is just broken.. i think you can get a kit from most auto parts stores.

I don't trust thgose boot rebuild kits... They are split down the middle and I don't think they hold the bearing grease all that well... but I know people who have used them and been fine. If you haven't damaged any of the gearing in the CV join then you can use one of these. BUt if it's broken up... time for a new axle.

somebody brought up a good point about whether he was talking about your lower ball joint or the cv joint. there are actually two lower ball joints, and the recall only covers one of them, I had to replace both of my other lower ball joints... find out for sure...

I too have a clicking noise on the front driver side, have replaced the hub but still got the noise. Tried to buy a cv joint but my local dealer in the UK says I have to buy I wjole new drive staft? True or FALSE, if False can someone give me a part number ?

My car just started clicking too. It seems like it is coming from the front passenger side of the car. I plan on taking it to Satan and letting them handle it.

True, you cannot just replace the CV joint portion of it, you have to replace the entire drive axle. Should only run aorund $100-$150 each...

i was at satan today, and asked them to check out the recalls for my 99gs, and they said there were none. everyone talks about that lateral ball joint arm thing and the recall, is satan dumb, or is the recall for only certain years??

Umm.. it's a recall.. you shouldnt have to pay for shit.. did mine and they didnt make me pay for anything..

yeah i got a 99 and im due for the recall.. im in a long line though. my local satan shop has lots of recalls.. and i have had to reschedule again because i was not in the city at the time of the first.. i can tell you one thing.. satan does not like recalls.. they wil get out of it if they can.... hopefully mine are ok and they wont need to be taken out...
