30901, Rack and Pinion install?
Posted by halfasss101, Dec-31-69 06:00 PM
I was just wondering how difficult it is going to be to install a rack and pinion. My Bro took my car while i was gone outta town and he took it into a curb at about 35+mph at about a 35-35 degree angle. It bent lower control arm, bent the strut, which was brand new, busted the hub off in half on the right rear, ground my front wheel up really bad, shreaded front tire, and maybe another control arm. But he's paying for everything, but i wont take it to a shop. I dont trust anyone with my car but myself and my friends that i know they know what they're doing. Just in case it needs a new one, how difficult and how long would you estimate it would take to remove and install? Thanks

I was just looking at mine yesterday, it doesn't look like its that bad because we don't have a lower cradle just a crossmember. If you have a lift then its cake, if you don't it isn't hard just might be time consuming. Looks like you remove the crossmember, remove the brakets to the lower control arms, and move the down pipe, and then disconnect the tie rod ends, and remove the steering column from inside the car through the boot, then drop the rack with what looks like four bolts. Doesn't look bad but I could be wrong.

I never replaced mine but I watched my step father replaced the ones on his dads ride. Well he's pretty much a backyard mechanic, and never took any of his or my mothers to a shop unless, it something he can't replace. It took him 1-2hrs it dependson the person.

I recomend for you to buy both Haynes and Chilton manuel. Both are good but the chiltons is more in depth.

Man, thats horrid what to your ride. I never let anyone drive my car just because what you wrote.

I would have that person buy and replace all the parts.

Its just two brackets (with 2 bolts each) two lines and the bolt that holds the steering column on. All can be reached from the bottom.

Got it all back together and running. No rack and pinion needed. The old one was fine amazingly. I didn't let him drive it, he just took the spare key out of my house! haha but he did pay for it all, about $1100 for lower u-control arm, short lower control arm, new tie rod end, 2 new wheels, rear hub, 2 new tires, new shock, and a torch to bend the body back where the top arm bolts to the body. Ya, it bent it! But its all good now. Thanks anyways for your guys' help!
