30693, Evo brake swap questions Posted by Slimyjr., Aug-25-07 10:27 AM
I've been looking into the swap and have a few uncertainties that i need to get cleared up. Please don't hesitate to tell me i am right or wrong.
1. You can use Evo 5-8 brakes. The rear bolts on but the front doesn't. Instead you have to use Galant VR-4 knuckles. This is because the holes for the caliper bracket bolts are not wide enough apart for Evo brakes.
2. I could've swore that Evo 3 brakes are a direct bolt up, except the dust shield has to be trimmed/removed. I think I saw a post on it somewhere else but I cannot find it.
Can some users please confirm these 2 statements? Thanks guys.

You can use the Evo8 brakes on the rear with some trimming of the dust shield. They bolt right up.
Now the fronts are a little bit harder to install because you need to come up with some global 7th or 8th gen steering knuckles. In the US, the Galant uses a McPherson strut setup. Elsewhere it uses the same double wishbone setup.
Read the two following links. They describe what needs to be done and they also tell you who to contact to find the knuckles if you are unable to find them elsewhere. Mitsumissle also has pictures of the knuckles installed with the Brembo brakes on them on dsmtalk.com.

I hope this answers your question. If not let know know.

havent heard of the evo 3 setup before, but you are correct about the evo 8. as long as you get non-USDM Galant knuckles they really are a plug and play set up. still a pricy option though but it opens a bunch of break upgrade options as well. good upgrade if you are planning to race the eclipse as there are aftermarket bolt on break cooling ducts avaliable for the brembo calipers as well.

do the evo8 rear calipers use the stock 2g rotors?

I would imagine not since the EVO 8 rear rotors are bigger than stock 2g FWD rotors

You could, but that would be overkill on those rotors. Beside's, it would look stupid and people would ask why you are such a dimwat.

do me a quick favor, go find a big empty parking lot or airstrip, something where you won't run into anyone or anything. accelerate to highway speed (roughly 75mph, faster if you go faster on the highway) and SLAM on the brakes. if you can get them to lock up or kick in the abs, you don't need more brakes.

do me a favor and just answer questions and not come in and give your random input. I know i don't NEED more brakes but that dosen't mean i don't WANT more brakes. just like everyone doesn't NEED to make their cars faster but they WANT those turbo kits anyways.
all i want to know is if the evo8 rear calipers work with the stock rotors because if they do, i can make them work with my rotors

Well to answer that question, no. You need the Evo 8 rear discs.

correct you need the rear rotors off an evo for the swap. IIRC the rotors are thicker then our stock ones anyway, but i dont know by how much
braking is 20% brakes and 80% tires anyway depends on the tires used in the applicaion and whether or not you swith them for track day. true you might be able to lock up your street tires but not come close on your track tires. still i like knowing i can stop with either tire if i need to. and thay look damn nice too! :thumbsup

Brake fade and heat has nothing to do with locking up your tires, there are many reasons for considering upgrades, not just performance or looks. If any one of you prefer to post useless info and not provide good information for the discussion, I am sure you can find the appropriete place to do so on TUNERS.

umm it's a little bit different from wanting more HP. fade/heat issues aside, if you can already lock your wheels then bigger brakes do not give increased braking performance. in fact they will usually bring worse performance.
the optimum braking force comes right before your tires lock up. once they lock you're just skidding rather than decelerating at a controlled rate. most people associate great brakes with being able to tap the pedal and have them lock up instantly. that's a really bad thing. your braking system is made to be able to modulate between an entire range of force. the ABS is dependant on the braking systems ability to modulate caliper pressure such that each wheel is kept on the verge of locking up. the fact that your tires now lockup with only a tiny push of the pedal means that your ABS now has almost no range to modulate within. this makes it suck.
additionally optimum braking comes from all FOUR wheels being on the verge of locking. if you alter any part of the front or rear systems you've also alterred the braking bias of the car. this can also be detrimental to performance.
the only real way to measure braking performance (aside from fade resistance) is to measure stopping distance. i can almost guarantee you that if you can already lock your tires then any further upgrades will not yield a decrease in stopping distance. prolly quite the opposite. the brakes will FEEL more responsive because you can lock the tires more easily. however this does not help your performance one bit. in fact it hurts it.
upgrading to big brakes due to fade issues is an entirely different story but MOST people never drive their car in conditions where fade becomes relevant.
the main suggested upgrade for our cars is the GSX front caliper swap b/c our front calipers are ridiculously small. for the most part the tires won't lock when you floor the pedal one stock brakes.
