When Im cruisin along around 80mph and I suddenly have to hit my brakes hard, why would they shudder?

Check if your brake rotors have uneven wear. If it does, try to get it resurface and change brake pads.

I checked the right tire today. Although Im not sure what Im looking for when it comes to “uneven” wear. Everything looks to be okay. The rotor is smooth.

yep, they are warped, get new upgraded ones, sloted or cros drilled, or they will just warp again.

You have ABS brakes. When braking hard at high speeds, that is the ABS system in act.

Okay…well, which is it…warped rotor or ABS? I didnt think I had ABS.

Here is a little background on my brake problem. I was having the same problems, squeeking, shuddering, in Nov. 1999. (I know the time cause I kept the reciepts :)) Anyways, my wife takes it to Firestone, they want to do a simple pad replacement. No biggie. $80. Then in Aug. of 00 (9 months later) the same problems begin…take it back. OH! they say. You need to have your rotors resurfaced. Alright, another $100. Then in the last several months the problem comes back AGAIN! So again my wife takes it back to the same damn place and guess what they want to do…brake pads and resurfacing again. Can you believe this! So the cars not going back to Firestone or any other place as far as Im concerned. I can do pads myself, Im gettin Metal Masters regardless tomorrow. But if the rotors warped…then I need to order that too.

Alright, if there is any squeaking your most liely having a brake problem. You did not mention any squeaking though....

I have ABS, and when I brake hard at high speeds, there is a "thumping", which I suppose you could call shuddering, and it is the ABS brakes doing their job.

Stock DSM rotors are notorious for warping, especially with crappy cheapo pads. Best bet is to buy powrstop or powerslots, with metal masters (I like porterfields street pads, the R4S, but they are pricey and you really don't need that level of braking or everyday. I just like knowing it's there :) )

AND, trust me on this one, disc brakes are one of the EASIEST things you can do yourself, stop getting charged $35+ per hour of labor at those shops and change the pads and rotors yourself. You'll be suprised how easy it is and you'll wonder why you ever paid for it before.

Yeah I know about doing them myself. I used to before I met my wife on my Accord, Blazer and Riviera. I even to the drums. WHAT A PAIN! By the way, she was the one who bought the eclipse (before I met her) So when the brakes go bad I generally just let her send it off. NOT ANYMORE!

So…damn, it seems that the consensus is the rotors are warped. Damn.
