Hey guys.. finally got all the pieces to do my rear disc conversion... I got a complete GS setup from a donor eclipse but the backing plates were a bit mangled. So i got with a friend who scored me a pair of backing plates (just the backing plates) from a local junkyard. Here is my problem:

I began taking out the compressed pins and in doing so to the first one the assembly came apart in my hands ( All the stuff that attaches to the backing plate which the emergency brake cable goes into. I then began to reassemble it in the same fashion as the on that was still in tact. After reassembling it (done it 3 times) when i pull the e brake cable manually both the top and bottom of the assembly move, while on the other just 1 of the sections moves. I am completely lost at this point. I have not lost any pieces. All 3 springs are attached (The long one and the 2 smaller ones) Is this movement normal? I would only guess no. Any information on this would be most helpful. Ill try to have some pics up today

I know it's maybe too late now to tell whoever is supplying your parts but there is never a need to removed the e-brake harware, springs and shoes when you do this conversion. The bearing hub has to be unbolted anyway and once you do that it slips out of the assembly so there is no need to pull all those frigging spings and parts.

Maybe the pics on my site will help a little with re-assembly?

If you have it assembled correctly then remember that the shoes need to be contained within the drum for them to push off of each other so you may not see the correct movement when the drum is off.

Well on the donor set I recieved, it came with the whole assembly.. callipers... rotors.. wheel bearings.. all together. I wasnt able to remove the old wheel bearing from the old rotors because of rust, but when i take the old rotor and wheel bearing and slip it over the assembled backing plate that i reassembled the rotor spins freely until I pull the cable. Once I pull the cable, the rotor will not spin freely anymore - thats what its supposed to do right? Well the other side when i put the rotor and wheel bearing and rotor over the other side it does the same. Spins freely until I pull the cable once again. Maybe I did put it back together correctly! :) (pats himself on the back). I guess because it wasnt slid over the rotor the movement was freaking me out some. But i still wonder why its only moving like that on one of the plates and not the other ( btw I took them both apart and reassembled them and they are both doing the same thing still. I mean the only thing holding the whole assembly down to the backing plate is 2 pins on the top and bottom, - as shown in your picture. I guess thats how they work then

Yes, you do need the flex lines from the donor vehicle as shown in the pics. Your old drum brake flex lines won't work.

The hard mount on the inner fender is the same on all vehicles.

If the flex lines from the donor vehicle look worn it's a great time to put in stainless braided flex lines while you are there.

No problem. Glad I can help out here. I'll have another conversion set for sale soon if anyone else is inspired. I just stripped an AWD Talon with a complete rust-free set of parts.

That makes me want to cry. It's so clean.

It gave its life so that my 95 GSX can live again.

Actually it may not be dead. I gave it to a local gearhead who is going to make a drag car out of it.

I may want that set. The ones I have are a little rough.

Well at least your GSX is alive and it died an honorable death. I'm just feeling sad because AWD DSMs are pretty hard to find where I live.

where are you at? we trip and fall over them around here. I'm looking at picking up a 2g talon for my wife if we can sell our subaru. the trick is finding one that hasn't had every wannabe hotrodder under the hood and behind the wheel

I'm in south Louisiana. I've seen one for sale here in the last three years. The 1g AWDs are a little bit more common, but it's not my style.
