29638, clunking noise from rear suspension
Posted by bokchoi, Jul-19-06 09:40 PM
Hi, I've been having a lot of trouble with my car lately and have posted a lot of questions and everyone has provided a lot of help; I dont know what I will do without this community. Well, I thought after my cooling system being resolved, now I'm having problems with my passenger side rear suspension. The ride is still the same: stiff with the blues with prokits. However, after driving over 90 miles on Sunday, I began hearing a loud clunking/rattling noise on the passenger rear side. It would only make noises over bumps, as if something was really loose. I went ahead I checked it out but I couldnt find any problems: I used a rubber mallet and just slightly pounded areas to find the noise but no. Anybody have/had this problem before? I've read about rear knuckle bushings but I wanted some more perspective on this, thanks!

I almost guarantee it's the notorious upper knuckle bushing.

i was hoping it wouldnt be...i heard it was a b*tch to change because it requires dissembling most of the suspension? Damnit...would anyone recommend bringing it to a mechanic or doing it myself? I've never messed with my suspension besides changing the struts and springs.

Well, you do have to pull it apart because the bushings most likely will have to be pressed in, if you've changed your springs and have a manual might as well give it a shot, if you get lost or stuck you can always put it back together and take it to a pro. The real bitch of it you can't just buy the bushings, Mitsu only sells them already installed in the entire rear knuckle for about $220 a side. The only other option I know of is getting them as part of a whole bushing kit from Energy, either way you end up having to buy more than you need to just replace the bushing that is worn.

Energy suspension sells the full polyeurethane suspension bushing set for $100 I canget these kits... I had the same problem on my car...I used a small holesaw in a drill motor to cut out the old bushings. Lubed up the new ones and pressed them in with a c-clamp in my driveway in about 2.5 hours! hope this helps!
