28499, Car shakes in first gear from a dead stop Posted by brokenrodguy, Jan-12-06 02:20 PM
I searched and couldnt mind a solid answer to my problem. Anyway heres what happens. The car shakes then comming out of a light. If I beat on it it doesnt happen but it does under normal conditions. Seems to get worse the longer I drive. Drove over an hour yesterday and it happened at every light. Motor mounts ? Trans syncho ? I know its not the wheels or tires cause they were replaced yesterday. What do you guys think ?

first thing that came to mind was "wheel hop" when i read "shakes in 1st" so do a search for that. and yes i read on older posts about wheel hop that the front mounts that howellautomotive sells will fix that. but look more into wheel hope to help sort this out. latorz

na its not wheel hop. Ive felt wheel hop before. This one is more suddle. I can accelerate slowly and it happens. Wheel hop usually happens when you beat the hell out of it

In that case, i have the same problem, i thought wheel hop was the same thing if you slammed it or not, yea mine shakes like a maniac some times off a stop, i thought it was just me giving it too little gas and too much clutch out, so i just give it more gas and less clutch now, but if i dont do that it trembles like a mother flipper.

yea, mine just started doing that as well. I have to give it more gas so i get a smooth 1st gear start, if not, it trembles.

Mine does this as well, I've been attributing it to my 150k mile stock clutch. It isn't slipping, but that rough engagement is annoying.

check the front and rear mounts as well as the rear roll bracket.

I checked my mounts and there fine. Its wierd, it only happens sometimes and it doesnt matter how you accel. I tried to replicate the problem on jack stand with no luck. What else can I look for. My clutch has only 60k on it

Mine does that too dude, usually when its cold outside, it doesnt seem to happen too much in the summer... its fucking wierd. I give it a little gas to help it, but it definitely doesnt feel normal. I have been asking this question on here for over a year, and most of the answers i got were either coil pack, spark plugs, wires, or fuel issues...
But i have never found a fix.

i would check the mounts, and look over your suspension good too. I had this problem for a minute(not as bad as yalls sounds) but changing my coil pack and plugs fixed it, as wierd as it seems.

Mine has been doing this also. The majority of the problem was the rear motor mount brace that connects to the transmission. It was loose. I also put in prothane mount inserts into the rear and now it is almost gone. I believe the rest of the problem will be eliminated when I do the rest of the mounts.

Would inserts help a mount out if it was torn ? I deffinately know its not ignition because you can feel it.

Inserts would *help*, but a new mount would be better. Mounts do wear out over time, I have the inserts, but I still need new mounts, or I plan on getting new mounts sometime.

My rear mount was definetally TOO flexible when I removed it to fix the brace and install the insert. The car feels much better now, but I'm not too sure how much the insert helped as the brace was really loose. You could give it a try , it doesn't take long to install them and you'll get to check the condition of the mount while you're at it. If it is torn or weak you should replace it but you might get improved results just by installing the insert and be able to hold off on getting a new mount.
