28291, Wheel Bearings bad what do I need to buy?
Posted by eclipticrider, Nov-10-05 10:08 AM
Had an alignment done today and mechanic said that both wheel bearings in the back are bad and one in the front is bad (mechanic is a family friend so he's not ripping me off)... What do I need to get to repair them?

Thanks

Yes you need the whole hub, the bearings ar not sold separately. I have a set rebuilt if your interested.

Buy Terry's
New Hubs = So much $ it makes you sick, just for bearings

Also, pray that your half-shafts aren't rusted to hell inside the hub.
Mine wouldn't budge with puller/compressor, the ends just mushroomed.

This is a job I'm not looking forward to in a year when I return back to my DSM.

PS. Terry, what ever happened with your cracked CF hood?

Hood sits on the car........heat was so bad this summer, i had to do something. Never got the CF painted either.

I basically rebuild the hubs, i scroung for parts ect and press them apart to rebuild them. Our bearings dry out very early and that is the leading cause to failure.

How hard would it be to replace just the bearings inside of the hub assembly? Motion Industries in Baton Rouge either has or can get pretty much an bearing you ever want/need. A lot of stuff you just call them up with the part number on the race and they have it in stock. If the part number is no longer used and there is no new part number listed you take a few measurements on the bearings and they will find a replacement that way.

Yea, if they look like this, you're in for an ordeal... 2 new hub assemblies,2 new axles, 4 cans of WD-40 and 15 sawzall blades later, it's fixed... if it comes to that.... this ended up being my soulution...

these are what the rear ones look like (courtesy of AZ_Dave) if terry's got em tho... get those... terry's good people...

I've only had to do the front (3 times).

Required:

- 32mm Socket, (preferably 1/2" drive)
- Torque wrench that goes up to 150 ft-lbs
- 17mm Socket
- (I think 15mm also)
- A LOT of PB Blaster
- Big nut to put on the axle for beating purposes. (you put it on just enough so you don't mushroom the threads on the axle when you beat on it)
- Cold Chisle for working the old hub off
- Hammer
- Possibly a sledge, depending on how bad the axle is rusted in there
- New Cotter Pin

Reccomended:

- A friend there for moral support and to run and get bandages for you if something goes awry
- Beer to numb the pain and make you not care about hurting anything on the car

EDIT: I did a writeup on how to do it for a school paper, I just need to find a way to upload it. Pictures and all!
