28051, Front tires rated H rear rated at S, I wanna make a run for top speed
Posted by gramozeka, Oct-03-05 09:02 PM
Front tires rated H rear rated at S, I wanna make a run for top speed a couple of times. Should I with held myself from doing that or is it going to be ok. Tire are in good shape. Different rating cuz that is how they came with the car. H rated tires are new, S rated are half way down. Car is unmodded.

Thanks for reply

I suggest replacing all 4 tires with Z rated for top speed run. Then again, the top speed our cars can do is around 130-140 give or take. V rated should be alright.

So do you think the S rated will blow up if I run 125-130 once or twice for a short period of time( 5 min max) ? I am not racing I will go in a straight line on a flat surface.

here is the speed ratings:
http://www.tirerack.com/tires/tiretech/techpage.jsp?techid=35¤tpage=35

S 112 mph 180 km/h Family Sedans & Vans
H 130 mph 210 km/h Sport Sedans & Coupes

----------------------------------------------------------

So I wouldn't go any faster than 112 mph, even for a little bit. At that speed the tire will become unstable and you really don't want that at 130 mph.

Put H on the rear and then goto 130 mph. It will take a long time and a lot of road.

Eric thinks for reply, I know the speed limits for tires, the s rated tires are freaking 75% good thread so i am not changing them any time soon. That is y I am asking a question (which is very dumb I know) if S tires can sustain a run for max speed. May be some one has done it going over the limits in their tires. Normally I am a very calm driver if that is any cancellation for one crazy attempt for the top speed in s rated tires 

Hey man I don't mean to beat this horse also but you seriously gotta consider how long your gonna be above 112mph. a tire can exceed it's recommended limits for brief periods of time (the lower the performance rating the less time you have). Then all sorts of forces go to work on the construction of the tire. an S rated tire can only handle those speeds for so long before it gives (maybe less than a minute and it's gonna take you a few minutes up there to get to 130. You don't have to listen to me or anyone else but seriously think about what your doing before you do it. No one here wants to read about you in the obituary. And it would be a shame to loose a member.

They didn't pop becuase you were 10mph over the rating for 10 seconds...he wants to go 30 mph over the rating for 5 minutes!!! Dude, don't fuck up your life and your car, get better tires before you try to pull shit like that. Listen to everyone here and quit trying to be a badass about going 140, keep it under control until you can handle it.

word

and its not that exciting, last time I went bombing in my car, I was shitting bricks because it takes sooooo long to get much past 110. my tires are also Z rated though.
those H rated tires are kinda spooky. I would not try for top speed on those... when a tire explodes from speed, it is pretty nasty, and since you are already flooring it, you cannot stabilize the car, so you eat shit and die when it happens.
borrow a set of ZRs from a friend if you really need to do this

Fuck it. I say do it. A run for top speed? no way dude!!!! Bro!!! Go for it! do it!

No, I haven't done this yet. I do like my car, and I love my life.
I will limit my top speed to 112 for now

Oh well by now you all think I am a dumb ass, so here it goes. Part of the reason I was asking this was to just know what fails in the tire first or maybe the speed rating is there to show that the tire can't control the car at those speeds. I mean each one of us has gone over the legal speed limit at one point or another(everyone is still ok), and if you don't know but any limit on the street actually no on special sections of highways such as sharp exits and turns ( I forget the actual #) is 20%-30% lower than the speed at which you will start loosing control, so I there is a safety margin on the tire as a part of it's certification program, so it would be nice to know what it is.

BTW I am 95% sure that all the highway speed limits are there as a result of oil crisis of the 70s

One more thing for all you BANME! bashers, at leat give me credit that I actually looked at what my tire rating is, if I was really that dumb I would go for top speed the first day I got the car. I on the other hand just go about fixing it and loving it, with a hope that it will love my back.

Now I will end my philosophical thought and go change my inner tie rod, and ATF

Ask Ralf Schumacher or one of the Michelin F1 tire guys about running an under-spec'd tire...

or

How the tire would actually fail is rather academic, since if it did you'd have a whole lot of other things to worry about than whether it was thermal or rotational stress that was the root cause of your car cartwheeling down the road. Just go by the code stampled into the sidewalls. Its not worth testing whether all those factory tire and chassis engineers were right or not, IMO.

But first, if you are running a mis-matched set low speed tires, you really should spend your energy on acquiring a decent set of V (or Z) rated tires, especially before trying to set any land-speed records. And please tell me your choice of rubber currently isn't those stock M+S all-season 14" RS doughnuts!

Yes, the national 55mph limit was a result of the 1970s oil crisis. In the mid 80s it went to 65, due to the fact that most people were ignoring it, and that fuel efficiency had increased a lot by then. In '95, the Feds let the states mandate their own limits. Nowadays, the biggest reason behind where speed limits are set is probably 'revenue generation' by local politicians and police forces...

Sorry for a late reply. I am not a 100% up on F1 but I know that there is only two companies that supply tires to them Brigstone and Michlin. I don't know what was the cause of the crush that you mention but I know that most of the time the tire failure over there is due to low tire pressure, below manufacturer recommended. The tire companies always fight with the teams about that cuz the teams want more traction and often lower the pressure below the minimum .8 bar(which is less than 11 psi) But sure as hell those tires don't have any speed rating.

Unfortunately I am running mismatched tires, but as I mentioned before they are like new and are they match each other on the axles and financially does not make sense to throw them out. And I will even tell you that they are M+S all season 16 inch no name tires, but I tell u that for non aggressive type of driving i am doing they are quite good. With constant rainfalls about a month ago they even showed a very good resistance to aquaplaning. My speeds rarely exceed 70 mph since I drive on inter city highways 50 mph speed limit. And I am not an aggressive driver.

Can I borow a set of z rated tires with rims form some one?

get him 2 big bottles of the NAWS quick.

Seriously whats the big deal, you can go 135 MPH, now you have your answer, so don't even try, esp if your on the highway.

and at those speeds anything can cause a problem, dont worry about your tires.

but to save your time/life, stock you can get to 135 mph with a good tailwind

Actually dumbass those tires were underspecced and had a maximum speed rating which unfortunately was not high enough. They changed one of the corners on the course which in turn elevated speeds at the exit of that corner, I believe that was the problem, which in turn exceeded the maximum speed ability of that tire, so they exploded, so they pulled that tire out of the race altogether and there were only SIX CARS that actually ran.

Let's put an end to this

djtrickee

I am glad u r laughing. Laughter extands life. You should be thankful, for the time this post has been up / I was on this forum, I probably prolonged your life for 2-3 years. Enjoy.

I am not running for the top speed on these tires

mcgyvr

If you are giving me those bottles I ll take em.

BumpinTalon

not knowing why the hell Ralf Schumacher crashed in his F1 car does not make me a dumbass. And I did say in my earlier response that I am not going for top speed.

Well, in actuality it was due to the failure of Michelin to make their tires handle the (known) loads at Indianapolis. It was the same course layout as the previous season. They wanted the FIA to change the track to accomodate their failing to do the engineering they should have done before they showed up to race. The culmination of this fiasco was, instead of just keeping their cars in the garages, the sight of all the Michelin-running teams pulling into the pits after forming up the grid and doing the warm-up lap.

But yes, Toyota was running their tires at too low a pressure, against Michelin's recommendations. It was suggested that some teams/drivers could have ran a competetive race since they did not overload the tires as much, but Indy is not a place to risk the odds. In many peoples opinions Michelin made too many compromises in the durability of their tires in favour of performance, and as a result the whole sport suffered.
