I've got my drivers axle hanging from the hub & I can't get the thing off. I've been hitting the end of the axle with a 3 lb. hammer & it's not budging. In fact it's mushrooming pretty bad. I'm not using the old axle as I have a new axle assembly that's going on. I've been spraying it down with Deep Creep to try to get into the splines, and it's not getting me anywhere. Can I use a torch on the hub/axle?

Any ideas as to how I can remove this thing?

There is actually a pller from Snap-on that will forge the axle out. its 70.00, you might be able to rent one from pep boys. it is not a typical puller like a three jaw. it is made speciacally for pulling(pushing) axles. if yours is siezed then its the only way.

Um yeah have fun with that :) I beat on my axle for like an hour, and it didn't even budge. The axle end was toast of course, using a 3lb sledge. I ended up borrowing a puller like the snap on one, and after about a half hour of impact wrenching on the damn thing, it finally started to move..a little. Another 15 minutes and I finally got it out. I don't think i've ever swore so much as when doing that damn axle haha..

I've come up with new swear words while trying to remove that f'n thing. Today I'm getting a slide hammer flange to get the damn thing off.

Can I put anti-seize on the splines & fitting for the hub when I put the new axle in? Or would that be a bad idea? I just want to have the car prepped in case I ever have to do this again.

no its fine go ahead and lube your shaft...lol

As long as the new axle is tight you are ok.

I always leave the nut on the thread out to the end to prevent mushrooming.

Another way if you have a compressor is an air hammer/chisel. Get the pointed tip and put it in the hole :-) then just hammer it loose.

Well I broke a 3 jaw 5-ton puller trying to get this motherf**ker off.



It broke right at the base of the arms. So then I'm like trying to figure out how the hell I'm gonna get this puller off since there's no bolt head to loosen the thing. I took one of the nuts off the arms & then hit the bolt through the arm. It's a good thing that I put a big towel over the puller. When that thing came off it went flyin'. The arm that I hit with the 3 lb. must of flew back into my hand 'cause it hit my middle finger & it's so swollen that I can hardly move it. Luckily I was wearing gloves cause I've got a chunk taken outta my finger.

DAMN IT!!!

Not sure WTF to do now. Can't put the wheel back on, can't take the fuckin' axle off. Not sure how anyone can tow it since it's in the garage with the ass by the door.

Pull the knuckle from the suspension, and work on it outside of the car!

It should come out along with the halfshaft if you get all of the balljoints seperated.

If you don't feel like seperating balljoints, just unbolt all of the arms and bring the whole assembly somewhere.

Well I finally got the axle out. I took Duckings advice & removed the knuckle completely. I took it to a machine shop & they used a press on it. He said that it took between 20-25 tons of pressure to pop that damn thing out. And supposedly it didn't damage anything on the hub. We'll see once I pick it up. Now I've got to replace every boot in the driver's suspension since I used a fork to remove everything.
