27323, Machine gun sound during high speed braking.
Posted by bzoss, Jun-19-05 08:14 AM
I don't really know what the heck could be doing this, but when I brake at speeds >~ 60mph I hear a sound that is somewhat similar to that of shuffling a deck of cards. It is not very loud, actually about the same as shuffling the cards.

I don't have ABS, so scratch that idea.

I did just upgrade my front brakes to the GSX calipers and rotors.

Everything worked fine for the longest, then I just started hearing that damn noise.

There is also now a squeek on initial braking but quickly goes away once the brakes are applied for longer than <1 sec.

Any ideas would be very helpful.

Thanks a million!

Warped rotors OR maybe your caliper is not bolted securely comes to mind

the squeeking is probably nothing to worry about, but the other sound is a new one for me. Can you tell if it is coming from the front or the rear?

Rear,

and the bolts are securely fastened.

I will keep playing with it until I can figure it out, but I really am at a loss for what the heck it could be.

I have taken the whole assembly apart twice now, trying to figure it out, but I come up with nothing both times. Everything seems to be installed 100%.

could the upper knuckle bushing be worn out and slapping around when you hit the brakes?

If its only when braking, I'd say severly warped rotors. Have you been driving it hard lately? When was the last time you got new rotors or had yours turned?

Remember that even though it happens with the braking it might not be the brakes making the sound.

For example i had a mazda in that would make a clicking sound when you would brake hard, when i took it for a drive turned out it did it under super hard cornering too. Turned out to be the rear swaybar link cracked and the sway bar hitting against the control arm under heavy inertia. Check for any other worn suspension parts as well, unless you are sure its the brakes.
