I have a 99 eclipse gs. I am wondering which ball joints the recall is for? Is it for the straight control arm or the curved one. I already replaced both the straight control arms myself because they were bad and I didn't know abot the recall. :( (Would have been nice if satan informed of the recall when I ordered the arms.)

Now the ball joint on the curved control arm on the passanger side is beyond bad. The dealer wants $235 just for the part and in these forums I found out about the ball joint recall. Is this one covered?

Only the lower lateral arm (the "straight arm") is covered, not the lower compression arm (the "curved arm").

the compression arm a dealer only item (can you say "SUCKS"). the best prices I've found around here were actually at Chrysler dealerships, but others have found mitsu pricing to be better. my suggestion to you would be to dig out the yellow pages and start making some calls. BTW chrysler wanted 200 and mitsu wanted 300, so good luck, man.

For any used suspension arm, I would replace the boot and re-pack it with fresh CV joint grease.

Used ball joints are a bit risky IMO, I've tried used ball joints before and it has never worked out. The main problem is that you really don't know what you're getting. I really feel it is best to spend the money and get new ones, bad ball joints are unsafe.

I agree. I don't think I would trust a used ball joint, especially one that mitsubishi made. :) I think I'll just have to bite the bullet and sell some blood or maybe a kidney so I can afford a new one. I will definately try a chrystler dealer as I have saved on parts from them before.

Anyone know the best way to seperate these suckers? Had a bitch of a time when I replaced the straight ones.

use a tie rod end separator, there are a couple different kinds. There is the "pickle fork" type and a big hammer, which is cheap and easy to find, but can be a pain in the ass, and there is another kind that is basically two peices of cast iron that are hinged together, one end goes on the ball joint end, and the other end has a bolt you turn which in turn applies pressure to the other end basically squeezing the ball joint out with out damaging the boot, those are the best, good luck finding one though.

Ya the "pickle fork" is the kind I've used in the past. Pain in the ass is right. I've also read that if you hit both sides of the ball joint with a hammer it some how magically pops out. I say BS but if someone is willing to come over and demenstrate this amazing technique I would appreciate it! :)


Just one more question. What "compression arms" are compatible with ours. Besides the Talon is there any others so I know what to ask for when I call a Chrysler Dealer. Anyone have the mopar part number?

95 - 2000 Avenger, Sebring.

Avengers, Sebring Sport Coupes, and Talons use the same arms.

I have never had a problem with the "whack both sides" method. Sometimes, it takes a couple of pops to work, but it has always worked for me. The ball joint sits in a conical seat, so whacking both sides will compress the seat, and pop the stem out.

It works. Trust me. It's the best way to not trash a boot, too.
