27205, Replacing front wheel bearing hubs suck...

The passenger side is kicking my ass. The axle splines are sooo rusty inside the hub, that sucker is in there for good almost. I've soaked that thing in PB blaster, and even had to resort to beating the axle end with a 3lb sledge, and it still wont even budge! I've obviously fucked up my axle, so i'll have to get a new one :rolleyes If that doesnt work, i may have to borrow the oxy/acc torch from work to heat that sucker up red hot. The driver side went perfectly though, axle came right out, and so did the hub out of the knuckle..barely any rust on that side. I've used a 4 ton, 3 jaw puller and my impact wrench on that sucker too, and it didnt do crap! I've done hubs on other cars before, and never have had this hard of time. Besides the torch, anyone have any other tips?

you should have sent a mail. I have a puller specifically for that so you dont damage the axle. Snap on sells the puller for 70.00 if you have a dealer nearby. How many hours is it to yuor house from mine? Do you have a spare axle now?

Jaw pullers wont do a bit of good. the puller for front axles is about 10 times more robust.

Yeah both snap on and Matco stop by our shop, although the snap on guy is hard to reach sometimes..I've kinda wanted new axles anyway, since i've beat on mine for years now..was going to get new ones, and use my old ones a "track spares" to get me home if i ever needed it..
The jaw puller actually worked really well for the driver side, but that side wasn't as rusty either..but the driver side is all done and everthing survived on that end :) Oh, its about 3.5 hour drive man.. Did you want to make a road trip or something haha :)

i can bring the puller up there thursday to give you a hand. If you can reach the snap on dealer i can give you the P/N of the puller, if not i can drive there to dig you out of a bind. I have a spare set of axles thats why i ask if you have a spare. Wed i am busy during the day, i could drive up there in the evening if you like.

I had pictures of the puller on here but i deleted them shortly after everyoen saw them.

How well does your snap on guy stock his truck? This is something he might have to order if he doesnt keep the truck packed!

Well, i'm not really in a bind for having the car anyway, as i drive my beater gaylant around to get where I need to haha. I'd feel bad for you to have to drive all that way though just for this stupid thing, but I really appreciate the offer. If all else fails, i'll let ya know. I know the snap on guy goes to a muffler shop accross the street from my work's shop, and i *think* he may be there either tomorrow or thursday. His truck is huge and always packed, so maybe he will have one. Hell, maybe the muffler shop has one I can borrow :) I'm going to try beating on the axle end some more, mostly because it's already fucked, and its sort of fun to beat the shit of out things haha. Great stress reliever.

I broke a breaker bar on one of the axle nuts. Fun stuff.

I've had to remove the whole knuckle once to get one out, what a PITA that one was

the first solution that comes to mind for any new problem with my car usually involves a can of gas and a match.....:wallbash

Well, this was with the knuckle out. I had a pipe wrench on the axle, somebody on the pipe wrench, and somebody leaning on a cheater bar on the breaker bar. Twisted the sum'bitch breaker bar apart.

Well I got the stupid fucking piece o shit out. Our brake/suspension guy at work had a super heavy duty puller. It has 3 arms that bolt to 3 of the wheel studs, and a 1" thick threaded center part, and that pushed on the axle. After about 25 minutes of using my 450ft lb impact wrench on it, it didnt even budge. Let it soak some more in some PB, went back at it, and low and behold, it budged like 1mm haha. Had a smoke break, went back at it again, and then she finally busted free. Holy crap, that sucked. I'd rather drop the tranny than do that shit again :) I'm really glad I did this though, because i was going to keep spare axles for the track in case i broke one..um yeah, that would have been interesting to say the least. I greesed the hell out of the new hub assembly, and splines, so hopefully that will prevent some rust for a while anyway. Suckers should damn near slide right out next time haha.. I can get a new axle from Napa for like 50 bucks, so i will prob go that route for a new one. Thanks for the offer Terry, i appreciate it! But I got er done!

Yup thats the puller. the your buddy it works better iff you crank it tight with the impact then take a large hammer and strick the end of the arbor towards the axle, then re tighten with the impact. thats howe it works most effective in my experience. it is a lot faster than trying to just crank it tight with an impact.

Glad to hear to got errrrrrrr donnnnnnnneee...lol
