26551, Loud poping when turning Posted by SilverRS, Mar-15-05 12:19 PM
Hey I need your help 2GNT. When I turn my car all the way to each direction when I am coming in or out of my driveway I hear a fairly loud pop. It comes from the front wheels, but I am not sure what it is. Any clues? Also will this be something that I will be able to fix on my own? I think it is the ball joint or CV joint, but I am not sure.

Is it a pop or a klunk, will it make the sound just sitting still, or do you have to be moving? Guys will immediatly go to the ball joint for a problem like this, so before anyone else asks, have you had the recall done? If not and you can, get under the car and start looking around for grease coming out of either the ball joints or CV boot, thats a good indicater something needs to be replaced. Also check your tie-rod ends, thats fairly possible as well. Grab the top of the tie-rod end and wiggle back and forth a little, see if it feels like its grinding or making the noise. While you have it in the air you might as well have a buddy turn the wheel lock to lock while you look at things, that may be helpful in figuring it out. Good luck.

Thanks, I checked for the recall and satan said that it has already been done. I will get underneath it and check it out. You said most likely it is the ball joint, if so how much is it to have it done? Or will I be able to do it on my own?

cv joint, either inner or outer (more than likely its the outer) but replace the whole axle anyways. http://www.raxles.com/

Sorry for my ignorance, but will I need to buy one for each side? Also will I be able to do this myself and is there a write up for it? How much would it cost for a shop to do it for me?
Thanks Farzad

This is a major problem with the Camry's, we replace at least 2 or 3 sets of front strut caps a day. I would check the strut caps.
