2504, S-curve..back end kicks out...BAM--- curb damage Posted by RyaN95i4, May-26-01 10:36 AM
umm..well, this sucks
just finished putting on the front and rear lower tie bars, went out for a test drive. on my way back home from a very impressive drive, i go thro an "S" curve near my house. ive taken this curve at 95-100 mph before, so im feeling particularly confident but not wanting to gun it thru the corner cause im still not used to the car as it stands, build up speed slowly and take the corner around 85-90ish. make it thru the first curve no problem, setup for the second part and the freaking back end kicks out like never before (for those that think all these freakin bars dont do anything, WRONG, hehe back end isnt supposed to kick out on a fwd car, at least not this easily. definitely caught me by surprise). anywho, the back end comes out, i (over)correct, it comes back but at the expense of banging the rear off the cement curb. i then ricochet (sp?) off the curb into the center median (no curb, just grass) i didnt want to over correct again so i took it easy, rode it into the grass a little, then got it back under control and pull over.
damage:
some scrapeing on the bottom edge of the curve of the sideskirt, small crack on the bottom corner of the rear skirt (neither obviously visible from above tho)
the passeneger side rear rim is garbage now. 6 of the 10 spokes are cracked (some worse then others, but all big). the rim is scraped to hell as well. tire is fine tho
Im not really to worried about those tho, the problem is when i put my old 14 on that rear passeneger corner, when the rim is tightened all the way, if you push and pull on the top of the tire, there is some play back and forth. i pulled the drum off, and the play is in the piece where the 5 lug bolts attach (i guess that is the wheel hub assembly?)
Question #1- is this a piece that is easily replaceable?
Question #2- is it safe to drive on it, short distances at least until i fix it(like to work, which would be like 1-2miles each way)?
(didnt someone here do the same thing after they installed the rre front lower bar?)

kind of ironic, but the other day, i was talking to my friends and i told them about all the suspension stuff i have waiting to go on. i told i was going to install it this weekend and then go wrap my car around a tree, lol. well...i was close, if i woulda put the sway bars on at the same time as well, then maybe i coulda meet mr. oak
oh well, whats done is done, now time to clean up the mess :)

hopefully, all you did was trash your wheel bearings. hopefully your hub is still ok. that is not safe to drive on (wheel could fall off....then that makes a whole new world of problems). you need to go ahead and disassemble the hub, and be prepaired to buy a new set of bearings.
bring it on.............
