2407, Cutting springs, is this alright?!
Posted by nappyjim, May-18-01 01:47 PM
Well, if you read my other post, i wanna get springs. When i do, i know a guy who will put em on for 100 dollars. The only problem is he doesnt have a compressor. So he said he would cut my springs first so that they compress the shocks and then put on the new ones. I dont really understand this, but will that havea any negative affect on my car? I dont understand why he is gonna cut my old springs when he is gonna take em off anyway. Could someone please explain and tell me if this is a bad thing or not? Thanks alot

What a crock of shit.

You don't need anything to compress a strut.. And you can rent a spring compressor for $15, fully refunded upon return of the compressor. Cutting your springs may lower your car, but it does bad things to ride quality, as well as handling ability and adds the danger of the spring collapsing.

If you ask me, this is something you can EASILY do yourself. It's maybe a 4 hour job, tops. Check out http://www.vfaq.com and look for the strut/coilover installs. it goes over in detail how to remove and reinstall your struts. For the most part, if i remember correctly, all you need is a 13mm wrench, a 15mm wrench, a spring compressor for the fronts, some sweat, and some good cuss words. (fuck, shit, sonuvabitch, and motherfucker will do.)

no its a 14mm, and a 17mm wrench, as well as a second jack (preferably a floor jack) if you dont have jackstands to free up the first jack for use. you will also need a crescent wrench and some vice grip pliers to take off the center strut piston nut. this is an easy job like dino said, it took me 6 hours just to do the front but thats doing the driver side twice and spending over an hour trying to loosen the sway bar nuts. it is bs for him to say he needs to cut your stock springs, once the car is raised, the lower fork bolt is out and the sway bar nut is off, the whole suspension will drop down and you can remove the suspension without a compressor. the only thing a compressor will do is prevent your piston nut from firing off the strut when you remove it, but you can take the nut off with the strut upside down to prevent this.

Dude, check www.vfaq.com, the coilover install is real good. Helped me out. Turning the strut assembly over on a ratchet works, there is virtually no kickback when the nut comes completely off. Don't cut the springs, in fact I think you should do it yourself, it's not hard at all, just time consuming.

To compress a strut you push it down and it goes. Not too hard.

Ive changed the springs on my car a few times, and i must say it isnt hard at all. you dont need two jacks.... i did it with one. i did use jackstands for safety reasone though. i used the "poor mans" manual spring compressor, which is nothing more than two hooks on a piece of all thread with a nut on top that compresses the spring. also, to get the strut to drop out of the front, i used a bar to press down on the suspension arm to give it slack. just a pointer, on the bottom of the strut there is a clamp with a bolt through it, when u put this on, be sure to line it up properly, if not it will make it a bitch to get the bolt back in. it never took me longer than 3 hours to do the front and back(my first time), and this most recent time i installed my Pro-kit springs and it took a little over 2 hours, again only using one jack. i say give it a shot, not really much you can do wrong. just REMEMBER to put the washer back on ur strut when u r reassembling them....my buddy forgot to on his and he has a nice nipple on his hood to show for it now! :-)
